JHi, I’m Jason, and this is MJ English. Okay, so here’s something a lot of learners believe: “Me too” works for everything. Someone says something, you say “Me too,” and you’re done. Right? Well, that’s not quite true.嗨,我是 Jason,這裡是 MJ English。很多學英文的人都相信一件事:Me too 什麼情況都能用。對方說一句話,你回 Me too,搞定。對吧?嗯,其實不完全是這樣。
MAnd I’m Mary. In Chinese, one little phrase covers everything, good or bad. But English cares about one thing: is the other person’s sentence positive, or negative? Your answer changes depending on that.我是 Mary。中文一句「我也是」就能回應所有事情,好事壞事都一樣。但英文只在意一件事:對方那句話是肯定句,還是否定句?你的回答會跟著變。
JLet’s see it in a story. Eric is from Taiwan, and his American friend Megan is standing next to him. It’s Sunday morning, and they’re stuck in a super long line for brunch. Megan says, “Ugh, this line is so long. I hate waiting in line.”我們用一個小故事來看。Eric 是台灣人,旁邊是他的美國朋友 Megan。週日早上,他們在一家早午餐店門口大排長龍。Megan 說:Ugh, this line is so long. I hate waiting in line.
MAnd Eric says, “Me too.” Here’s a surprise: that one is actually correct! “Hate” feels negative, but look at the sentence. There’s no don’t, no not. So it’s a positive sentence, and positive sentence means “Me too.”Eric 回:Me too. 驚喜來了,這句其實是對的!hate 感覺很負面,但你看句子本身,沒有 don’t,也沒有 not。所以它是肯定句,肯定句就回 Me too。
JRight. The feeling is negative, but the grammar is positive. Like, “I love pancakes.” “Me too.” Easy. Then Megan says, “That’s what I heard. I didn’t eat breakfast, so I’m starving.” And Eric says, “Me too! I didn’t eat anything this morning.”對。感覺是負面的,但文法上是肯定句。就像 I love pancakes. 回 Me too,很簡單。接著 Megan 說:That’s what I heard. I didn’t eat breakfast, so I’m starving. Eric 回:Me too! I didn’t eat anything this morning.
MUh-oh. Now there’s a problem. “I didn’t eat” has didn’t in it, so it’s a negative sentence. Eric should say “Me neither.” By the way, Americans pronounce it NEE-ther. Me neither.糟糕,問題來了。I didn’t eat 裡面有 didn’t,所以是否定句。Eric 應該說 Me neither. 順便一提,美國人把 neither 唸成 NEE-ther。Me neither.
JYep. And listen to how Megan handles it. She says, “Oh, you didn’t either? Then we’re both starving.” She repeats his idea back using “either.” That’s very natural, and it’s a great one to copy.沒錯。而且你聽 Megan 怎麼接。她說:Oh, you didn’t either? Then we’re both starving. 她用 either 把對方的意思重複一遍,非常自然,很值得學起來。
MSo here’s rule number two. Negative sentence, with don’t, didn’t, can’t, or not, say “Me neither.” Quick test, Jason. I can’t cook at all.所以第二個規則是:否定句,也就是有 don’t、didn’t、can’t 或 not 的句子,就說 Me neither. 來個小測驗,Jason。I can’t cook at all.
JHa! Me neither. I burn toast almost every morning. And see, I didn’t even have to think about it. Negative sentence in, “Me neither” out.哈!Me neither. 我幾乎每天早上都把吐司烤焦。你看,我連想都不用想。聽到否定句,就回 Me neither。
MNow, what if you don’t want to think at all? Use “Same here.” It works for positive and negative sentences. “I’m tired.” “Same here.” “I don’t get it.” “Same here.” It’s the safe choice.那如果你連想都懶得想呢?就用 Same here. 肯定句否定句都能用。I’m tired. 回 Same here. I don’t get it. 也回 Same here. 這是最保險的選擇。
JNice. So if you ever freeze in the middle of a conversation, “Same here” saves you. Now, you might also hear some fancier versions, more formal ones. “So do I” for positive, and “Neither do I” for negative.很好。所以聊天聊到腦袋一片空白時,Same here 可以救你。另外你也可能聽到比較正式的說法。肯定句用 So do I,否定句用 Neither do I。
MLike, “I like spicy food.” “So do I.” Or “I don’t drink coffee.” “Neither do I.” And “Neither can I” for can’t sentences. They sound a bit formal, though. In daily life, most people just say “Me too” and “Me neither.”比如 I like spicy food. 回 So do I. 或是 I don’t drink coffee. 回 Neither do I. 遇到 can’t 的句子就說 Neither can I. 不過這些聽起來比較正式,日常生活大部分人還是說 Me too 和 Me neither。
JGood to know. Okay, back to our story. Eric says, “Yeah. And it’s so humid today. My shirt is sticking to me.” And Megan says, “Tell me about it! My hair is a mess. I don’t want to stand out here much longer.”了解。好,回到故事。Eric 說:Yeah. And it’s so humid today. My shirt is sticking to me. Megan 回:Tell me about it! My hair is a mess. I don’t want to stand out here much longer.
MThis is point number three, and it’s a tricky one. When someone complains about the weather or a situation, it’s not about them. “It’s so humid” is about the air. If you say “Me too,” it sounds like “I’m humid too.”這是第三個重點,有點容易搞混。當有人在抱怨天氣或某個狀況,那件事不是在講他自己。It’s so humid 講的是空氣。如果你回 Me too,聽起來就像是說「我也很潮濕」。
JHa, that would be funny. So say “Tell me about it!” It means, yes, I totally agree, it’s terrible. Or you can say “I know, right?” Both sound natural and friendly.哈,那會很好笑。所以要說 Tell me about it! 意思是對啊,我完全同意,真的很糟。或者說 I know, right? 兩個都很自然、很友善。
MSame with traffic. “The traffic was terrible today.” “Tell me about it!” Or “This line is so long.” “I know, right?” You’re agreeing with the situation, not talking about yourself.塞車也一樣。The traffic was terrible today. 回 Tell me about it! 或是 This line is so long. 回 I know, right? 你是在附和那個狀況,不是在講你自己。
JNow back to the line. Megan just said she doesn’t want to stand out there much longer. And Eric says, “Me too. I don’t want to wait anymore.” That’s his second mistake.回到排隊的場景。Megan 剛說她不想再站在外面了。Eric 回:Me too. I don’t want to wait anymore. 這是他的第二個錯誤。
MRight, “I don’t want” is negative, so it should be “Me neither.” And Megan models it: “Me neither. Oh look, they’re calling our number! These pancakes better be good.”對,I don’t want 是否定句,所以應該說 Me neither. Megan 就示範了一次:Me neither. Oh look, they’re calling our number! These pancakes better be good.
JAnd Eric ends with, “I know, right? After all this waiting!” That’s a perfect one, because he’s agreeing with the situation. A nice way to finish the story.最後 Eric 說:I know, right? After all this waiting! 這句用得很棒,因為他是在附和那個狀況。故事用這句收尾剛剛好。
MOkay, one bonus. You don’t have to agree! If someone says “I hate waiting,” you can say, “Really? I don’t mind.” That’s totally fine.好,加碼一個。你不一定要附和!如果有人說 I hate waiting,你可以說 Really? I don’t mind. 這樣完全沒問題。
JOr if a friend says “I’m cold,” you can say, “Not me. I’m fine.” Short and friendly. Agreeing is nice, but being honest is nice too.或是朋友說 I’m cold,你可以回 Not me. I’m fine. 簡短又友善。附和很好,誠實表達也很好。
MLet’s do a quick recap. Positive sentence, “Me too.” Negative sentence, “Me neither.” Not sure? “Same here.” And for complaints about weather or a long line, “Tell me about it!”來快速複習一下。肯定句回 Me too。否定句回 Me neither。不確定的話,就說 Same here。如果是抱怨天氣或大排長龍,就說 Tell me about it!
JAnd remember, “hate” is still a positive sentence. That’s why Eric’s first answer was right. The words to watch for are don’t, didn’t, can’t, and not.還有記得,hate 仍然是肯定句。這就是為什麼 Eric 第一個回答是對的。要留意的字是 don’t、didn’t、can’t 和 not。
MHonestly, if you only remember “Me neither,” you’re already ahead of most learners. I don’t like waiting either, by the way.老實說,如果你只記得 Me neither,就已經贏過大部分學英文的人了。對了,我也不喜歡等。
JMe neither! Okay, we’re almost done. Let’s hear the whole conversation one more time, from the beginning.我也不喜歡!好,我們快結束了。來把整段對話從頭再聽一次。
MListen for the “Me too,” the “Me neither,” and the “Tell me about it.” Here we go.仔細聽 Me too、Me neither,還有 Tell me about it 出現在哪裡。我們開始吧。

JThe second time through, you’ll notice that Eric’s answers sound fine to him, but Megan always matches the sentence she hears. Try to guess the right reply before it comes.第二次聽的時候,你會發現 Eric 自己覺得沒問題,但 Megan 總是配合她聽到的那句話來回應。試著在答案出現前,先猜猜正確的回答。
