道地的說法是 “What a scorcher!”“It’s brutal out there.”

Dialogue

Tom

Morning, Sophie! Ugh, what a scorcher. Can you believe this heat?

Sophie

Tell me about it. I’m melting. I walked two blocks and I’m already drenched in sweat.

Tom

Same here. My phone says it feels like 105 with the humidity. There’s a heat advisory all week.

Sophie

A hundred and five? That’s crazy. No wonder I’ve been cranking up the AC nonstop.

Tom

Ha, my electric bill is going to hurt. So how are you trying to beat the heat?

Sophie

Iced coffee and staying indoors, basically. There’s no way I’m going for a run in this.

Tom

Smart. Just make sure you stay hydrated — drink way more water than usual.

Sophie

Good call. Oh, did you hear they canceled the outdoor festival? It’s just too dangerous in this heat.

Tom

Yeah, probably for the best. They’re telling everyone to stay out of the sun in the afternoon.

Sophie

Makes sense. When is this heat wave supposed to break, anyway?

Tom

Not till next week, sadly. Hang in there. Stay cool, okay?

Sophie

You too! Drink that iced coffee before it turns hot.

Next Time

Today is very hot, so uncomfortable.

What a scorcher! / It’s brutal out there.

母語人士愛用 scorcher(大熱天)、brutal(狠、要命)、”It’s an oven out there”(外面像烤箱)這種有畫面的說法,聽起來自然又有梗。

I flow a lot of sweat.

I’m drenched in sweat. / I’m sweating like crazy.

drenched in sweat”(被汗濕透)畫面十足;口語也常說 “sweating like crazy / like a pig”(狂流汗)。

You should drink more water for your body.

Stay hydrated. / Make sure you drink plenty of water.

就到位;想再自然一點就用 “Make sure you drink plenty of water.”,關心的語氣剛剛好。

Vocabulary Boost

scorcher/ ˈskɔːrtʃər / n.

What a scorcher — I can barely breathe out there.(有夠熱,我在外面快不能呼吸了。)

heat wave/ ˈhiːt weɪv / n.

動詞常搭 break(熱浪結束、退去)。

This heat wave is supposed to last all week.(這波熱浪聽說會持續一整週。)

humidity/ hjuːˈmɪdəti / n.

It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity that gets me.(讓我受不了的不是溫度,是濕度。)

heat advisory/ ˈhiːt ədˈvaɪzəri / n.

The city issued a heat advisory for the weekend.(市府對週末發布了高溫警報。)

drenched/ drɛntʃt / adj.

drenched in sweat” =汗流浹背。

I was drenched in sweat after the walk.(走完那段路我全身汗濕透。)

crank up/ kræŋk ʌp / phr. v.

反義是 turn down(調小)。

Let’s crank up the AC — it’s an oven in here.(把冷氣開大一點,這裡熱得像烤箱。)

beat the heat/ biːt ðə hiːt / phr.

Everyone’s at the pool trying to beat the heat.(大家都跑去泳池消暑。)

stay hydrated/ steɪ ˈhaɪdreɪtɪd / phr.

Remember to stay hydrated in this weather.(這種天氣記得多補充水分。)

What a scorcher!
Tell me about it.
I’m melting.
drenched in sweat 汗流浹背
It feels like 105.
beat the heat 消暑 / crank up the AC 冷氣開大
There’s no way I’m ~ing

Sentence Patterns

1. What a + 名詞!(感嘆「有夠…」)

聊天氣時 “What a scorcher!”

例:What a scorcher!(有夠熱的一天!)
例:What a day — I’m exhausted.(今天有夠累,我快虛脫了。)
例:What a mess out there in the rain.(外面下雨亂成一團。)
名詞前記得加 a/an。想更強烈可以說 “What an absolute scorcher!”。

2. It feels like + 溫度/名詞(體感)

It feels like 105 with the humidity.(加上濕度體感有 105 度。)
例:It feels like an oven in here.(這裡感覺像烤箱。)
例:It feels like summer already.(感覺已經是夏天了。)

3. There’s no way I’m + V-ing(打死我也不…)

要強烈表達「我絕對不要做某事」,用 “There’s no way I’m + 動詞-ing”。

There’s no way I’m going for a run in this.(這種天我才不要去跑步。)
例:There’s no way I’m cooking tonight — it’s too hot.(今晚太熱了,我才不煮飯。)
例:There’s no way I’m waiting in that line.(我才不要排那條隊。)
“in this” 是口語省略,= “in this heat / weather”(這種天氣下)。

4. Make sure you + 原形/Stay + 形容詞(叮嚀關心)

Make sure you stay hydrated.(記得多補充水分。)
例:Make sure you wear sunscreen.(記得擦防曬。)
例:Stay cool! / Stay safe out there!(好好消暑!/在外面注意安全!)

Transcript

J
It’s the middle of a heat wave. You step outside and it hits you like a wall — the kind of heat where your sunglasses fog up and your shirt sticks to your back in about thirty seconds. A coworker walks by and says, “Man, what a scorcher, huh?” And you want to say something back, something natural — but all that comes out is “Yes… very hot.” And the conversation just dies right there.同事經過丟一句「Man, what a scorcher, huh?」(唉有夠熱齁),你想回點自然的話,結果只擠得出「Yes… very hot.」
J
I’m Jason, and this is MJ English. Today we’re learning how to actually chat about the weather — the small talk that Americans do every single day, especially when it’s this hot.
M
I’m Mary. And here’s why this matters: in the US, weather is the number one icebreaker. In an elevator, at the coffee machine, waiting for the bus — people talk about the weather to be friendly. It’s not boring, it’s social glue.我是 Mary。為什麼這重要呢:在美國,天氣是頭號 icebreaker(破冰開場)。 And during a heat wave? It’s all anyone talks about. So if you can throw in a natural line about the heat, you instantly sound like a local.
J
So let’s start with how to say it’s hot — without just saying “very hot.” Tom opens with “What a scorcher.” A scorcher is a super hot day. You can also say “It’s brutal out there” or “It’s an oven outside.” Tom 開場就說 “What a scorcher.”。scorcher(大熱天)就是熱到爆的一天。你也可以說 “It’s brutal out there.”(外面熱到要命)或 “It’s an oven outside.”(外面像烤箱)。Sophie replies, “Tell me about it. I’m melting.” “Tell me about it” doesn’t mean explain it to me — it means “I totally agree, I feel the same way.” And “I’m melting” is a fun, natural way to say you’re way too hot.Sophie 回:”Tell me about it. I’m melting.”
M
Then Sophie adds, “I’m already drenched in sweat.” Drenched means completely soaked. Way more vivid than “I have a lot of sweat,” which, honestly, sounds a little odd in English.接著 Sophie 補一句 “I’m already drenched in sweat.”(我已經全身汗濕透)。drenched(濕透)就是整個被浸濕。比 “I have a lot of sweat” 生動多了——後者老實說在英文裡有點怪。And notice Tom says, “It feels like 105 with the humidity.” That “feels like” number is the heat index — how hot it actually feels once you add the humidity. Americans quote that number all the time in summer.還有注意 Tom 說 “It feels like 105 with the humidity.”(加上濕度體感有 105 度)。
J
Next, the classic heat-wave question: “How are you trying to beat the heat?” To beat the heat just means to find ways to stay cool. Sophie says she’s “cranking up the AC” — turning the air conditioning way up — and drinking iced coffee. How are you trying to beat the heat?”(你都怎麼消暑的?)beat the heat(消暑)就是想辦法讓自己涼快。Sophie 說她 “cranking up the AC”(冷氣開到最強),再配冰咖啡。And she says, “There’s no way I’m going for a run in this.” “There’s no way I’m” plus verb-ing is how you say you absolutely refuse to do something. There’s no way I’m going outside. There’s no way I’m cooking today.她還說 “There’s no way I’m going for a run in this.”(這種天我才不要去跑步)。”There’s no way I’m” 加動詞-ing 就是「打死我也不做某事」。There’s no way I’m going outside.(我才不出門)There’s no way I’m cooking today.(今天我才不煮飯)。
M
Then Tom does something really natural — he shows he cares. “Make sure you stay hydrated.” Stay hydrated means keep drinking water. And at the end, they both say “Stay cool” — which is both literal and just a friendly way to say goodbye in the summer. Make sure you stay hydrated.”(記得多補充水分)。
M
One quick culture note: a heat advisory is an official warning from the National Weather Service that it’s dangerously hot. When there’s one, cities open cooling centers, outdoor events get canceled — like that festival in the dialogue — and everyone’s told to stay out of the sun in the afternoon.
🔁 [DIALOGUE REPLAY]
M
Hear how easy that was? Sophie and Tom weren’t using fancy words. “What a scorcher,” “I’m melting,” “beat the heat,” “stay hydrated,” “stay cool” — short, natural phrases that any local would use. What a scorcher”、”I’m melting”、”beat the heat”、”stay hydrated”、”stay cool”——都是隨便一個在地人都會用的短句。The magic isn’t big vocabulary. It’s having a few ready-to-go lines so you can jump into the conversation instead of freezing up with “very hot.”
J
So here’s your challenge: next time it’s hot, don’t say “very hot.” Say “What a scorcher” or “It’s brutal out there.” Practice these out loud until they feel natural. 改說 “What a scorcher” 或 “It’s brutal out there.”。 Because small talk is where friendships start. Nail the weather chat, and you’re one step closer to sounding like a local. See you next time on MJ English!
M
Bye, everyone — stay cool out there!
