J“Yes, I’m agree!” Okay, that sentence is wrong, but I get why so many of us say it. Hey everyone, I’m Jason, and today we’re fixing one tiny word. It’s an easy fix, and it makes you sound a lot more natural.「Yes, I’m agree!」這句是錯的,不過我懂為什麼大家都會這樣說。大家好,我是 Jason,今天我們要修正一個小小的字。很好修,而且修完會自然很多。
MAnd I’m Mary. Okay, so picture this. It’s Tuesday night at a coffee shop. Kevin is from Taiwan, and his American friend Emma is sitting across from him. They’re planning a birthday party for their friend Sam.我是 Mary。好,想像一下,週二晚上,在一間咖啡店。Kevin 是台灣人,對面坐著他的美國朋友 Emma。他們正在幫共同的朋友 Sam 規劃生日聚會。
JEmma says, “I think the rooftop bar is the best place. The view is amazing.” Kevin gets really excited, and he says, “Yes, I’m agree. The rooftop is perfect.” It sounds friendly, but “I’m agree” is not correct English.Emma 說:「I think the rooftop bar is the best place. The view is amazing.」Kevin 超興奮,他說:「Yes, I’m agree. The rooftop is perfect.」聽起來很熱情,但「I’m agree」不是正確的英文。
MRight, and Emma notices right away. She says, “Ha, you mean I agree. Agree is already the verb, so no am.” Kevin is surprised. He had no idea, because lots of people say it that way.對,Emma 馬上就發現了。她說:「Ha, you mean I agree. Agree is already the verb, so no am.」Kevin 很驚訝,他完全不知道,因為很多人都這樣說。
JSo why do we do this? In Chinese, we often put a little word in front of agree, so we want to add an am in English too. But in English, agree is a verb. It does the whole job by itself.那我們為什麼會這樣?中文常常會在「同意」前面加個小字,像「我是同意的」,所以英文也想塞一個 am 進去。但在英文裡,agree 本身就是動詞,它一個字就把事情做完了。
MHere’s my trick. Think about “like” and “want.” You would never say “I’m like coffee.” You say “I like coffee.” Agree works the same way. So it’s “I agree.” Or, “I agree with you.” No am. Easy, right?我的小技巧是這樣:想想 like 和 want。你絕對不會說「I’m like coffee」,你會說「I like coffee」。agree 也一樣。所以是「I agree.」或「I agree with you.」不加 am。很好記吧?
JGood one. Now the question side. Later, Kevin asks, “So, are you agree we need a cake?” And Emma says, “Do you agree, not are you agree.” Agree is a verb, so questions start with do. “Do you agree?”這個好。接著看問句。後來 Kevin 問:「So, are you agree we need a cake?」Emma 說:「Do you agree, not are you agree.」agree 是動詞,所以問句用 do 開頭。「Do you agree?」
MYep. And you can make it a little stronger with “Don’t you agree?” That’s like saying, “You think so too, right?” For example, “Don’t you agree the rooftop is great?” Same rule: it still starts with do.沒錯。你也可以說「Don’t you agree?」語氣稍微強一點,意思像是「你也這麼覺得吧?」比如「Don’t you agree the rooftop is great?」規則一樣,還是用 do 開頭。
JNow the negative. Same rule. We say “I don’t agree.” Or just, “I disagree.” Both are totally fine. “Disagree” sounds a little stronger and more formal, so save it for when you really mean it.再來是否定。規則一樣。我們說「I don’t agree.」或是直接說「I disagree.」兩種都可以。「Disagree」聽起來比較強、比較正式,真的很確定時再用。
MAnd sometimes saying no feels hard, especially with friends. So here’s the softest one: “I’m not sure I agree.” It means, “Hmm, I’m not so sure.” Very polite. Yes, there’s an am, but it goes with “sure,” not with agree.有時候說不同意真的很難開口,尤其是跟朋友。所以這是最委婉的說法:「I’m not sure I agree.」意思是「嗯,我不太確定耶。」很有禮貌。對,這句有 am,但它是跟 sure 搭配,不是跟 agree。
JOkay, I’ll be honest, I used to do this too. My first week abroad, my roommate asked about pizza for dinner, and I said “I’m agree!” He just smiled and said, “Pizza it is.” He was too nice to correct me.好,老實說,我以前也這樣。剛出國的第一週,室友問晚餐要不要吃披薩,我說「I’m agree!」他只是笑一笑說:「Pizza it is.」他人太好,沒有糾正我。
MHa, nice roommate! Now, what if you really like using am? Emma has an answer. She says, “If you want am, say, I’m with you. That one works.” It works because “with” is not a verb, so am is fine there.哈,好室友!那如果你就是很想用 am 呢?Emma 有答案。她說:「If you want am, say, I’m with you. That one works.」這句行得通,因為 with 不是動詞,所以這裡用 am 沒問題。
JThat’s the secret. Don’t put am right before a plain verb like agree. But am is fine with words like with or sure. So “I’m with you” is good. “I’m on board” is good too, and it means, count me in. And “I’m all for it” means, I really like that idea.這就是祕訣。am 不要直接放在 agree 這種原形動詞前面,但跟 with、sure 這類字一起用就沒問題。所以「I’m with you」可以,「I’m on board」也可以,意思是算我一份。「I’m all for it」則是我超贊成這個想法。
MThose three are perfect for quick replies. Say a friend asks, “Should we try the new ramen place?” You can say, “I’m on board!” or, “I’m all for it!” Short, friendly, and totally correct. Now, back to our story.這三句最適合快速回應。比如朋友問:「Should we try the new ramen place?」你可以說「I’m on board!」或「I’m all for it!」又短、又親切、又正確。好,回到我們的故事。
JAfter Emma fixes the question, she adds, “And yes, totally.” Totally is a super common way to say you agree, in just one word. Someone says, “That movie was great.” You say, “Totally.”Emma 糾正完問句後,又補了一句:「And yes, totally.」Totally 是很常見的說法,一個字就能表示同意。有人說「That movie was great.」你就回「Totally.」
MShort and casual. Then Kevin asks, “What about Friday night?” And Emma says, “I agree, but Friday is busy for everyone. Saturday might be easier.” She says yes first, then adds her idea. That’s really smooth.簡短又隨性。接著 Kevin 問:「What about Friday night?」Emma 說:「I agree, but Friday is busy for everyone. Saturday might be easier.」她先說同意,再補上自己的想法,這樣超順的。
JYeah, “I agree, but…” is a gentle way to say, “I like it, and I have one small problem.” The first part is friendly, and the second part is your idea. It doesn’t sound like an argument. You can use it at work too.對,「I agree, but…」是個溫和的說法,意思是「我喜歡,但我有一個小問題。」前半句很友善,後半句才是你的想法,聽起來不像在吵架。工作上也能用。
MYou can also swap the first part. Instead of “I agree,” try “Fair point, but…” That means, “You make a good point.” Or “That makes sense, but…” Both are friendly. For example, “That makes sense, but what about the cost?”前半句也可以換掉。不說「I agree」,改說「Fair point, but…」意思是「你說得有道理」。或是「That makes sense, but…」兩個都很親切。例如「That makes sense, but what about the cost?」
JThen Kevin answers, “Fair point. I agree with you. Saturday it is. I’ll book the rooftop tonight.” So “Fair point” can stand alone too. And “Saturday it is” just means, okay, Saturday, it’s decided.然後 Kevin 回答:「Fair point. I agree with you. Saturday it is. I’ll book the rooftop tonight.」所以「Fair point」也可以單獨用。而「Saturday it is」的意思就是,好,就週六,決定了。
MOne quick bonus. It’s the same kind of mistake. Some people say “I’m not understand.” That one is wrong too. Understand is a verb, so it’s “I don’t understand.” Same fix as agree: no am, and use don’t.再送一個小補充,是同一類的錯。有些人會說「I’m not understand.」這也是錯的。understand 是動詞,所以要說「I don’t understand.」修法跟 agree 一樣:不加 am,用 don’t。
JLet’s put it all together. Say, “I agree.” Ask, “Do you agree?” Say no with, “I don’t agree.” Want an am? “I’m with you.” Want to add something? “I agree, but…” Five short patterns, and none of them has am before agree.我們來整理一下。同意就說「I agree.」問別人說「Do you agree?」不同意說「I don’t agree.」想用 am?「I’m with you.」想補充?「I agree, but…」五個短句型,沒有一個在 agree 前面放 am。
MTry saying them out loud this week. Even in the shower, seriously. Your mouth remembers better than your eyes do. Then next time a friend has a great idea, “I agree” will just come out on its own.這週找時間大聲唸出來吧,在浴室也可以,認真的。嘴巴比眼睛記得牢。下次朋友有好點子時,「I agree」就會自然脫口而出。
JWe’re almost done. Let’s hear the whole conversation one more time. This time, listen for two things: agree with no am, and the question that starts with do.我們快結束了。來把整段對話再聽一次。這次請注意兩件事:agree 前面沒有 am,還有用 do 開頭的問句。
MIt’s Tuesday night, a coffee shop, a rooftop party, and a chocolate cake to plan. Kevin and Emma, one more time. Here it comes.週二晚上,咖啡店,頂樓派對,還有一個巧克力蛋糕要規劃。Kevin 和 Emma,再來一次。來囉。
🔁 [DIALOGUE REPLAY] 重播情境對話
JDid you catch it the second time? Kevin starts with that extra am, but by the end he says, “I agree with you.” No am at all. That’s the whole lesson in one little chat.第二次聽有發現嗎?Kevin 一開始多了一個 am,但到最後他說的是「I agree with you.」,一個 am 都沒有。整集的重點,就在這段小對話裡。
