「人山人海」別說 people mountain people sea!

別說 people mountain people sea | MJ英語 Daily English | 生活英語

人好多說 It’s so crowded! There are so many people.(不是 There have);跟朋友可以誇張一點:It’s a zoo!

💡 先搞懂:「人山人海」不是 people mountain people sea

people mountain people sea It’s so crowded.、It’s packed.;跟朋友聊天還可以說 It’s a zoo!。 有趣的是,a sea of people(一片人海)是真的英文,只是沒有 mountain。

People mountain people sea! → It’s so crowded!;② There have so many people. → There are so many people.;③ The people are very many. → There are a lot of people.

Amy

Here we are, Raohe Night Market! Wow, people mountain people sea!

哇,人山人海!(直翻成 people mountain people sea)

Mark

People mountain… what? Oh, you mean it’s packed!

Amy

Yes! That’s how we say it in Chinese. There have so many people tonight.

(There have 也是直翻)

Mark

Ha, I love it. But in English, we’d say there are so many people. Or just, it’s so crowded.

不過英文會說 there are so many people,或直接說 it’s so crowded。

Amy

Got it. It’s so crowded tonight. Saturdays are always like this.

Mark

No kidding. It’s a zoo in here! Where’s the pepper bun stand?

Amy

A zoo? There are no animals here!

Mark

Ha, it’s just a saying. It’s a zoo means it’s crazy busy.

It’s a zoo

Amy

Oh, I like that. Okay, follow me. The line for pepper buns is huge.

Mark

Then let’s go now, before it gets even more packed.

Next Time

People mountain people sea!

It’s so crowded!

It’s a zoo!

There have so many people.

There are so many people.

存在用 there are

為什麼:中文的「有」表示「存在」時,英文用 there is/there are;have 是「擁有」,例如 I have a ticket。

The people are very many.

There are a lot of people.

用 there are

為什麼:英文不說 people are many,要說 there are a lot of people,或換成 It’s crowded。

Sentence Patterns

It’s so crowded.

It’s so crowded tonight.(今晚人好多。)
例:It’s packed!(擠爆了!)
例:The MRT is jam-packed.(捷運擠得水洩不通。)

There are so many people.

「有」表示存在時,用 there is/there are。

例:There are so many people here.(這裡好多人。)
例:There’s a huge crowd.(有一大群人。)
例:There were a lot of tourists.(那時候有很多觀光客。)
have 是「擁有」,例如 I have two tickets;「某處有人」要用 there are。

It’s a zoo!

It’s a zoo in here!(這裡根本是動物園!)
例:It’s crazy busy.(超級忙亂。)
例:It’s a madhouse.(亂成一團。)
正式一點的場合說 It’s very crowded. 就好。

It’s so busy.

The night market is so busy tonight.(夜市今晚好熱鬧。)
例:This place is always busy.(這家店永遠很多人。)
例:Weekends are busy here.(這裡週末人很多。)

It’s dead in here.

It’s dead in here.(這裡好冷清。)
例:It’s pretty quiet tonight.(今晚滿安靜的。)
例:There’s hardly anyone here.(幾乎沒什麼人。)

Transcript

J
Picture a Saturday night market. Hot oil sizzling, music everywhere, somebody’s elbow in your side, and the smell of fried chicken in the air. Welcome, everyone! I’m Jason, and today we’re talking about how to say “so many people” in English.
M
And I’m Mary. Oh, I know that feeling. Shoulders bumping, nobody can walk fast, and you’re holding your bubble tea over your head. Today’s story happens right there, with Amy and her American friend Mark, who’s here for the first time.
J
Amy wants Mark to try pepper buns. They’re those hot, peppery buns from the oven, so good. They walk in, and Amy says, “Here we are, Raohe Night Market! Wow, people mountain people sea!”Amy 他們走進夜市,Amy 說:「Here we are, Raohe Night Market! Wow, people mountain people sea!」
M
And Mark has no idea what that means. He says, “People mountain… what? Oh, you mean it’s packed!” He guessed right, but only because he could see the crowd. 他說:「People mountain… what? Oh, you mean it’s packed!」
J
Here’s the thing. “People mountain people sea” is a word-for-word copy of a Chinese saying. It’s a famous joke online. A native speaker hears it and thinks, mountain? Sea? Where? It doesn’t mean anything in English. 「people mountain people sea」是把中文成語一個字一個字照翻,在網路上是很有名的笑話。
M
So what do we say instead? The easiest one is, “It’s so crowded.” Simple, polite, works anywhere. You can use it for a train, a shop, or a night market. “It’s so crowded tonight.” 最簡單的是「It’s so crowded.」 「It’s so crowded tonight.」
J
Want something stronger? Say, “It’s packed.” Packed means filled up, like a suitcase before a trip. And if it’s really, really full, say, “It’s jam-packed.” Jam here means squeezed tight, like people jammed on a train.
M
Next, Amy’s second mistake. She says, “There have so many people tonight.” That one is wrong, and it’s super common. In Chinese, one little word means both have and there is. English splits them up. 她說:「There have so many people tonight.」
J
Right. “Have” means you own something. “I have two tickets.” “I have a pepper bun.” But for what exists in a place, we say there is or there are. “There are so many people.” Easy to memorize. 「I have two tickets.」「I have a pepper bun.」但說某個地方有什麼,要用 there is 或 there are。「There are so many people.」
M
And Mark says exactly that. He says, “But in English, we’d say there are so many people. Or just, it’s so crowded.” He doesn’t scold her. He just gives her the better line, and Amy says, “Got it. It’s so crowded tonight.”Mark 他說:「But in English, we’d say there are so many people. Or just, it’s so crowded.」 It’s so crowded tonight.」
J
Then Amy adds, “Saturdays are always like this.” And Mark answers, “No kidding. It’s a zoo in here! Where’s the pepper bun stand?” A zoo is full of animals, noise, and chaos. Sounds like a night market, right?接著 Amy 說:「Saturdays are always like this.」Mark 回答:「No kidding. It’s a zoo in here! Where’s the pepper bun stand?」
M
Amy is confused. She says, “A zoo? There are no animals here!” Mark explains, “Ha, it’s just a saying. It’s a zoo means it’s crazy busy.” So it’s a fun way to say loud, crowded, and a little wild. 她說:「A zoo? There are no animals here!」Mark 解釋:「Ha, it’s just a saying. It’s a zoo means it’s crazy busy.」
J
One small warning. “It’s a zoo” is casual. Use it with friends, family, or coworkers you’re close to. At a formal dinner, or in a work email, stick with “It’s very crowded.” Safe and polite. 正式的晚宴或工作 email,就用「It’s very crowded.」
M
Last weekend I took my cousin to a concert in Taipei, and I told her, “It’s a zoo in here!” She laughed so hard. It’s perfect for friends and family. Maybe not for your boss, though.上週末我帶表妹去台北看演唱會,我對她說:「It’s a zoo in here!」
J
Now a nice little extra. The word “busy” can describe a place, not only a person. “The night market is so busy tonight.” It means lots of people, lots of life. 「The night market is so busy tonight.」
M
Then Amy says, “Oh, I like that. Okay, follow me. The line for pepper buns is huge.” Line here means a row of people waiting. “The line is huge” is a handy sentence for any popular food stand.然後 Amy 說:「Oh, I like that. Okay, follow me. The line for pepper buns is huge.」 「The line is huge.」
J
And Mark says, “Then let’s go now, before it gets even more packed.” See that? He uses packed in a very natural way. Getting more packed just means more and more people are coming in.Mark 說:「Then let’s go now, before it gets even more packed.」
M
Okay, here’s my favorite part. Is “a sea of people” real English? Yes! It really is. It means a huge crowd, like waves of heads. So the sea part is fine. It’s only the mountain that doesn’t travel well. 「a sea of people」是真的英文嗎?
J
Right! So you can say, “There was a sea of people at the concert.” Just leave the mountain at home. Nobody says “people mountain people sea” in English, so don’t worry about sounding fancy.對!所以你可以說:「There was a sea of people at the concert.」
M
What about the opposite, when a place is empty? Casual English says, “It’s dead in here.” Dead just means very quiet, nobody around. Not scary at all. 口語英文會說:「It’s dead in here.」
J
And a softer way is, “It’s pretty quiet tonight.” Polite and gentle. Good for people you don’t know well. Dead is casual, quiet is safe. Both mean not many people.
M
Now let’s hear the whole story together, without stopping. Pay attention to how Mark fixes things in such a friendly way, and notice how smoothly it all flows when two friends are just chatting.
J
And remember, this is the same conversation you just heard in pieces. Amy will still make her two little mistakes, and Mark will still help her. You already know the better lines now.
M
Okay, volume up. Get comfy, grab a snack if you like, and enjoy the whole thing straight through from the very top. Here it is.
🔁 [DIALOGUE REPLAY]
J
Quick takeaway. It’s the same conversation, so Amy still says “people mountain people sea” and “There have so many people.” Now you know the better lines: crowded, packed, and there are. 這是同一段對話,所以 Amy 還是會說「people mountain people sea」和「There have so many people.」
