JOkay, when a coworker asks how your weekend was, what’s the first thing you actually say? I’m Jason, and for a lot of us, it’s just one word: “Nothing.”好,當同事問你「週末過得如何」,你通常第一句會說什麼?我是 Jason,很多人的反射動作就是只丟一個字:「Nothing.」(沒有。)
MI’m Mary, and that one word basically kills the conversation. The other person just stands there, and neither of you knows what to say next, so it gets awkward fast.我是 Mary,那一個字基本上會把對話直接聊死。對方就愣在那邊,兩個人都不知道接下來要說什麼,氣氛瞬間變尷尬。
JThis happens every Monday, right? Someone walks by with their coffee, sees you, and goes, “How was your weekend?” It’s not a big question, but somehow our brains just go completely blank.這種情況每個禮拜一都會發生對吧?同事端著咖啡走過來,看到你就說:「How was your weekend?」(週末過得如何?)其實不是什麼大問題,但我們的腦袋常常就整個當機。
MHere’s the thing, doing nothing is actually a great answer. Native speakers love saying they did absolutely nothing all weekend and enjoyed every minute of it. That’s not the real problem here.其實「什麼都沒做」是個很棒的答案。母語者超愛說自己整個週末什麼都沒做、耍廢耍得很爽。真正的問題不在這裡。
JThe real problem is how you say it. There’s a simple formula today, just three parts: your answer, plus one extra line, plus you bounce the question back.真正的問題是「怎麼說」。今天教一個簡單公式,就三個部分:答案,加一句延伸,再把問題反問回去。
MSo instead of just saying “Nothing,” you say something like, “Nothing much, just caught up on sleep. How about you?” Three little parts, and just like that, the conversation keeps moving instead of dying.所以不要只回「Nothing」,可以說:「Nothing much, just caught up on sleep. How about you?」(沒做什麼,就是補了個眠。那你呢?)三小段,對話就繼續接下去,不會冷掉。
JOr you could say, “Pretty chill. I stayed in and binged a show. Did you do anything fun?” Same idea: your answer, one small detail, then a question back.或者可以說:「Pretty chill. I stayed in and binged a show. Did you do anything fun?」(滿悠閒的,我在家追完一整部劇。你有做什麼好玩的嗎?)一樣的邏輯:答案、一個小細節、再反問回去。
MIf it really was a quiet one, try, “Not much, honestly. I needed a slow weekend. What about you?” Or you could say “Busy one,” and add a quick word about what kept you busy. Either way, it still sounds warm, not cold or distant.如果週末真的很平靜,可以說:「Not much, honestly. I needed a slow weekend. What about you?」(真的沒做什麼,我需要一個放鬆的週末,你呢?)也可以說「Busy one」(滿忙的一個),再補一句忙什麼。不管哪種,聽起來都是溫暖的,不會冷冰冰。
JHonestly, “How was your weekend?” is basically just a greeting. Nobody wants your full itinerary, so three lines and you’re done, no need to explain your whole Saturday.老實說,「How was your weekend?」基本上就是一句招呼語而已。沒有人真的想聽你完整行程,三句話就可以收尾,不用交代你整個禮拜六在幹嘛。
MNow the traps, because there are three that Taiwanese speakers fall into a lot. The first is simply answering with one word, “Nothing,” full stop, and just standing there.接下來講三個常見的陷阱,台灣人很容易踩到。第一個就是只回一個字「Nothing」,句點,然後就呆站在那邊。
JThat’s trap number one. “Nothing,” period, feels cold in English, even if you don’t mean it that way. Fix it with, “Nothing much, just caught up on sleep.”這就是陷阱一。「Nothing」,句點,在英文裡聽起來很冷淡,就算你完全不是那個意思。修正方式是:「Nothing much, just caught up on sleep.」(沒做什麼,就補了個眠。)
MTrap number two is tense. People often say, “Just stay home,” but the weekend already happened, so it needs past tense. It should be, “I just stayed home.”陷阱二是時態問題。很多人會說「Just stay home」,但週末已經過去了,要用過去式。應該說:「I just stayed home.」(我就待在家。)
JThis one is huge, honestly, it’s the biggest giveaway that English isn’t your first language. Stayed, binged, went, took, tried, every single one of them needs that past tense ending.這個真的很致命,老實說,這是最容易被聽出來「英文不是母語」的地方。stayed、binged、went、took、tried,每一個都要用過去式。
MTrap number three, “I have no special,” is a straight translation from Chinese. But special is an adjective, so it can’t stand alone like that in a sentence.陷阱三,「I have no special」,這是照中文「沒什麼特別的」直接逐字翻過來的。但 special 是形容詞,不能單獨這樣用在句子裡。
JInstead, say, “Nothing special, really.” Adding really at the end softens it and makes it sound like something a real friend would say, not a translation.正確說法是:「Nothing special, really.」(真的沒什麼特別的。)最後加一個 really,語氣就變柔和,聽起來像朋友會講的話,不像翻譯機翻出來的。
MNow, what if you actually went somewhere, or even just did something small, like finally cleaning your apartment? Going out answers work just as well, and there’s no shortage of good options around Taipei.那如果週末真的有出門,或者只是做了一件小事,像終於把家裡打掃乾淨,那也完全可以講。出門類的答案一樣好用,而且台北附近能講的地方多得是。
JYou could say, “I went to Jiufen with some friends,” or “We took the kids to Yangmingshan for a hike.” Simple, past tense, and it gives the other person something to react to.可以說:「I went to Jiufen with some friends.」(我跟朋友去了九份。)或者「We took the kids to Yangmingshan for a hike.」(我們帶小孩去陽明山健行。)簡單、過去式,對方就有東西可以接話。
MOr, “I tried that new ramen place near the office.” It doesn’t need to be exciting, just one small detail so it doesn’t sound like an office report.或者:「I tried that new ramen place near the office.」(我去吃了公司附近新開的拉麵。)不用多精彩,只要一個小細節,聽起來才不會像在交報告。
JAfter you answer, always bounce it back. “How about you,” “Did you do anything fun,” “Anything exciting,” any of these work fine, just don’t forget that part.回答完之後,一定要把問題反問回去。「How about you」、「Did you do anything fun」、「Anything exciting」,隨便一句都可以,重點是千萬別忘記這一步。
MIt’s like a game of catch, honestly. You give a little, they give a little. If you never throw the question back, it turns into an interview.這有點像在玩傳接球,老實說。你給一點,他也給一點。如果你都不把問題丟回去,整段對話就會變成單方面的面試。
JAnd when they answer, react a little before moving on. “Oh no, Sunday traffic is the worst,” or “That sounds amazing, I need one of those weekends.”對方回答之後,先簡單反應一下再繼續。「Oh no, Sunday traffic is the worst.」(喔不,星期天的車潮最可怕。)或者「That sounds amazing, I need one of those weekends.」(聽起來超讚,我也需要那種週末。)
MYou could also ask a small follow-up like, “Was the weather okay up there?” It shows the other person you’re actually listening, not just waiting for your own turn to talk again.也可以順便追問一句,像:「Was the weather okay up there?」(山上天氣還好嗎?)這樣對方會覺得你是真的有在聽,不是只在等自己講話的機會。
JAnd when it’s time to wrap up, you don’t need a big exit. “Okay, I should get to my desk,” or “Anyway, have a good one,” both work fine.要收尾的時候,也不需要搞得很戲劇化。「Okay, I should get to my desk.」(好,我該回座位了。)或者「Anyway, have a good one.」(總之,祝你順利。)兩句都可以直接用。
MThat word anyway at the start of a sentence is basically a signal. It means, okay, I’m wrapping this up now. Native speakers use it constantly.anyway 放在句子開頭,基本上就是一個信號,意思是「好啦,我要準備收尾了」,母語者天天都在用這個字。
JLet’s run through today’s vocab quickly. Nothing much, chill, catch up on, binge, hike, traffic, how about you, and get to my desk, that covers Monday morning.快速複習一下今天的單字:nothing much、chill、catch up on、binge、hike、traffic、how about you,還有 get to my desk,這些大概就是週一早上會用到的全部了。
MChill just means relaxed, catch up on works for sleep or a show, and binge means you watched a ton of episodes back to back in one sitting.chill 就是輕鬆、悠閒的意思,catch up on 可以接睡眠、工作或劇,binge 是指一口氣連續看完好幾集,中間都沒停。
JOkay, we’re just about done. Let’s hear Adam and Ivy one more time, and listen for the moment Ivy restarts, because that’s when the whole thing opens up.好,今天差不多就到這裡。我們再聽一次 Adam 跟 Ivy 的對話,仔細聽 Ivy 重新開口的那個瞬間,因為整段對話就是從那裡開始打開的。
🔁 [DIALOGUE REPLAY] 重播情境對話
JOkay, so the second time through, notice how Ivy just adds one small detail, and that’s the exact moment the whole conversation opens right back up.好,第二次聽的時候,注意 Ivy 只是多加了一句小細節,整段對話就在那一刻整個打開了。
MTell us in the comments, what do you usually say when a coworker asks about your weekend? We would genuinely love to hear your go-to line.留言告訴我們,被同事問「週末做了什麼」的時候,你平常都怎麼回?我們很想知道你的招牌答案。
JOkay, I should get to my desk.好,我該回座位了。
