「你方便嗎」別再說 Are you convenient!老外聽了愣住的中式英文一次修正

2026 09 15 en convenient 1 Daily English | 生活英語

想問同事「你明天方便嗎?」,你脫口 “Are you convenient tomorrow?”——對方愣了一下,因為在英文裡,人不能「方便」

中文「方便」的主詞是人,英文 convenient 的主詞是「時間/事情」,人只能放在 for 後面:Is that convenient for you? 更自然的是 Does that work for you?Is this a good time?

💡 先搞懂:為什麼「你方便嗎」直譯就錯

中文的「方便」可以說人:「你方便嗎」「我不方便」,主詞都是人。英文的 convenient 不一樣——它形容的是時間、事情、地點(a convenient time、a convenient location),人只能放在 for 後面:Is 3 p.m. convenient for you? 所以 Are you convenient? 在母語人士耳裡像在問「你這個人方不方便使用」,意思整個歪掉。日常更常聽到的其實是 Does that work for you?(那樣可以嗎)和 Is this a good time?(現在方便嗎),連 convenient 都不用。

台灣人最容易卡的雷:① Are you convenient?(人當主詞)→ Does that work for you?;② I’m not convenient tomorrow.I’m not available tomorrow.Tomorrow doesn’t work for me.;③ When are you convenient? When works for you?

場景:Rachel 剛到美國公司,要跟同事 Eric 約下週的專案會議;她把中文的「方便」直接搬進英文,Eric 一邊約時間一邊糾正。

Rachel

Hey Eric, I want to set up the project meeting. Are you convenient next Tuesday?

嘿 Eric,我想約專案會議。你下週二方便嗎?(中文腦直翻,convenient 不能拿人當主詞)

Eric

Ha, you mean, does Tuesday work for me? Yeah, Tuesday’s fine. What time?

哈,你是想問「週二我可以嗎」吧?可以啊,週二沒問題。幾點?

Rachel

Ten in the morning? Or if that’s bad, I’m also convenient in the afternoon.

早上十點?如果不行,我下午也方便。(又把人當主詞了)

Eric

Quick fix: we’d say I’m also free in the afternoon, or the afternoon works too. Convenient is for the time, not the person.

小修一下:我們會說「我下午也有空」或「下午也可以」。convenient 是形容時間,不是形容人。

Rachel

Oh! So I say the time is convenient, not that I am convenient.

喔!所以是「時間」方便,不是「我」方便。

Eric

Exactly. Like, is ten convenient for you? The time is convenient, and you come after for.

沒錯。像「Is ten convenient for you?」——方便的是時間,人放在 for 後面。

Rachel

Got it. Is ten convenient for you, then?

懂了。那十點對你來說方便嗎?

Eric

Ten works. Let’s grab the small room on the second floor. It’s more convenient, right next to our desks.

十點可以。我們用二樓那間小會議室吧,比較方便,就在我們座位旁邊。

Rachel

Perfect. And if something comes up, I’ll just say that doesn’t work for me, instead of I’m not convenient.

太好了。之後要是有事,我就說「那樣我不行」,不再說「我不方便」了。

Eric

Now you sound like you’ve been here for years.

這樣聽起來就像已經在這裡待好幾年了。

🎯 30 秒快速複習

convenient 的主詞是「時間/事情/地點」,人只能放在 for 後面:Is that convenient for you? 問人方不方便,日常更常說 Does that work for you? / Is this a good time?;說自己不方便用 I’m not available / That doesn’t work for me。

①convenient 形容時間/事情,不形容人
②人放 for 後面:convenient for you
③你方便嗎=Does that work for you?
④現在方便嗎=Is this a good time?
⑤我不方便=I’m not available
⑥那樣我不行=That doesn’t work for me
⑦什麼時候方便=When works for you?
⑧別說 Are you convenient?

下次這樣說 Next Time

「方便」直翻最常踩的三個雷,換成這樣說老外秒懂。

① 問對方方不方便

❌ 中文腦會說

Are you convenient tomorrow?

想說「你明天方便嗎」

✅ 該這樣說

Does tomorrow work for you?

問「那個時間可不可以」

為什麼:英文問的是「時間對你來說可不可以」,不是「你這個人方不方便」;Is tomorrow convenient for you? 也對,但 work for you 更日常。

② 說自己不方便

❌ 中文腦會說

I’m not convenient tomorrow.

想說「我明天不方便」

✅ 該這樣說

I’m not available tomorrow.

說「我沒空」或「那時間我不行」

為什麼:人不能當 convenient 的主詞;說自己沒空用 available / free,或把主詞換成時間:Tomorrow doesn’t work for me.

③ 問什麼時候方便

❌ 中文腦會說

When are you convenient?

想說「你什麼時候方便」

✅ 該這樣說

When works for you?

問「哪個時間可以」

為什麼:同樣是人當主詞的錯;When works for you? 或 When would be a good time? 才是母語人士約時間的問法。

重點句型 Sentence Patterns

1. 問對方方不方便 → Does … work for you? / Is … convenient for you?

主詞放時間或事情,人放在 for 後面。

例:Does Tuesday work for you?(週二你可以嗎?)
例:Is ten o’clock convenient for you?(十點對你來說方便嗎?)
例:Would Friday be a good time?(週五方便嗎?)
work for you 是最日常的講法;convenient for you 也對,稍微正式一點。

2. 現在方便嗎 → Is this a good time?

打電話、敲門、開口前先問一句,最有禮貌。

例:Is this a good time to talk?(現在方便講話嗎?)
例:Is now a good time?(現在方便嗎?)
例:Got a minute?(有一分鐘嗎?)
Got a minute? 是熟人之間的口語版。

3. 說自己不方便 → I’m not available / That doesn’t work for me

說自己沒空用 available/free;或把主詞換成那個時間。

例:I’m not available tomorrow.(我明天沒空。)
例:Tomorrow doesn’t work for me.(明天我不行。)
例:I’m tied up all morning.(我整個早上都忙。)
tied up 是「忙到走不開」,比 busy 更口語。

4. 問什麼時候方便 → When works for you?

約時間最萬用的一句,主詞是 when,不是 you。

例:When works for you?(你什麼時候可以?)
例:When would be a good time for you?(你什麼時候方便?)
例:What time suits you?(你幾點方便?)
suit 也是「對某人來說合適」,英式較常用,美式聽得懂。

5. 「方便的話」→ if it’s not too much trouble / when you get a chance

中文「方便的話幫我…」的那個「方便」,英文不用 convenient。

例:If it’s not too much trouble, could you send me the file?(方便的話,可以把檔案傳給我嗎?)
例:When you get a chance, take a look at this.(方便的時候看一下這個。)
例:I’d rather not say.(我不方便說。)
「不方便說」也不是 not convenient,是 I’d rather not say(我寧可不說)。

逐字稿 Transcript

J
Hey everyone, I’m Jason. So there’s this belief out there: the Chinese word for convenient works exactly like the English one, so to ask someone if they’re free, you just say “are you convenient.” Today we’re breaking that belief completely.哈囉大家好,我是 Jason。有一個大家都深信不疑的觀念:convenient 就是「方便」,所以想問別人有沒有空,就直接說 Are you convenient。今天我們就是要打破這個觀念。
M
And I’m Mary. And here’s the thing right away: a person can never be the convenient one in English. If you say, “are you convenient,” a native speaker gets confused, maybe even a little uncomfortable.我是 Mary。先講重點:在英文裡,「人」永遠不能是那個 convenient(方便)的角色。你說 Are you convenient,母語人士聽了會愣住,甚至覺得怪怪的。
J
In Chinese, that word can describe a person directly. You literally ask someone “are you convenient,” meaning are you free, or you say “I’m not convenient,” meaning I’m not available. The person themselves gets to be the convenient one.中文的「方便」可以直接形容一個人。你會說「你方便嗎」,意思是你有沒有空,或「我不方便」,意思是我沒辦法。「人」本身就可以是那個方便的角色。
M
But in English, convenient never describes a person. It only describes a time, a thing, or a place, like a convenient time or a convenient location. The person can’t be the convenient one.但英文的 convenient 從來不形容人,只形容時間、事情、或地點,像 a convenient time(方便的時間)或 a convenient location(方便的地點)。「人」不能是那個 convenient 的角色。
J
So where does the person go? Right after the word “for.” That’s the whole trick. Is ten convenient for you? The time is convenient, and the person just comes after “for.”那人要放哪裡?就放在 for 後面,這就是整個訣竅。Is ten convenient for you?(十點對你來說方便嗎?)方便的是「時間」,人只是跟在 for 後面而已。
M
Let’s go through the three mistakes people actually make with this word. Rachel wanted to set up a meeting with Eric, and she walked straight into every single one of them.我們來看看大家用這個字真正會犯的三個錯。Rachel 想找 Eric set up(安排)一場會議,結果三個錯全部踩進去了。
J
First one: “Are you convenient next Tuesday?” That puts the person where convenient shouldn’t go. The fix is simple: “Does Tuesday work for you?” Now the time is doing the work, not the person.第一個:Are you convenient next Tuesday? 把人放到了不該放的位置。修正很簡單:Does Tuesday work for you?(週二你可以嗎?)現在是「時間」當主角,不是人。
M
Second one, and Rachel said this too: “I’m also convenient in the afternoon.” Nope. Say “I’m also free in the afternoon,” or “the afternoon works too.”第二個,Rachel 也講過:I’m also convenient in the afternoon. 不行喔,要說 I’m also free in the afternoon(我下午也有空),或 the afternoon works too(下午也可以)。
J
Third one: “When are you convenient?” Same problem again, the person is stuck where convenient goes. Say “When works for you?” instead. Super simple swap.第三個:When are you convenient? 同樣的問題,人又卡在 convenient 該放的位置。改說 When works for you?(你什麼時候可以?)就對了,換法超簡單。
M
So notice the pattern. Every single time, you either move the person to a different spot in the sentence, or you drop convenient completely and use a different word.有沒有發現規律?每一次,你要不是把「人」移到句子裡別的位置,就是乾脆不用 convenient,換一個完全不同的字。
J
And here’s something I really want to be clear about, because people take this too far sometimes. Convenient with a person is not always wrong.有件事我想講清楚,因為有些人會理解過頭。Convenient 旁邊出現「人」,並不是永遠都錯。
M
Exactly. “Is that convenient for you?” is completely correct English. The rule isn’t “never use convenient near a person.” The rule is just that a person can’t be the convenient one.對。Is that convenient for you?(那樣對你方便嗎?)完全是正確的英文。規則不是「convenient 旁邊不能有人」,規則是「人不能當那個方便的角色」。
J
So “convenient for you” works because “that” or “the time” is still the convenient one. The person just shows up after “for.” That’s allowed, and it’s actually pretty common.所以 convenient for you 沒問題,因為「那件事」或「那個時間」才是方便的角色,人只是出現在 for 後面,這樣完全可以,而且其實很常見。
M
In the dialogue, Eric even used convenient the right way, about the meeting room. He said it’s more convenient because it’s right next to their desks. Nobody’s making a person the convenient one there.情境對話裡,Eric 就正確用了一次 convenient,講的是會議室。他說 it’s more convenient(比較方便),因為就在他們座位旁邊。這裡完全沒有把「人」當成方便的角色。
J
Right, the room is the convenient one there, not Eric and not Rachel. That’s a thing, not a person, so it’s totally fine, and honestly a great example to hold onto.沒錯,那裡方便的是「會議室」,不是 Eric 也不是 Rachel。是一個東西,不是人,所以完全沒問題,這其實是一個很值得記住的例子。
M
Okay, let’s talk about what people actually say every single day, because honestly, native speakers don’t even reach for convenient that often in casual, everyday talk.好,來講講大家日常真正會說的話,因為老實說,母語人士在輕鬆聊天時根本沒那麼常用 convenient 這個字。
J
The most common one you’ll hear is “Does that work for you?” People say this everywhere, at work, with friends, with family, planning anything at all, big or small.最常聽到的是 Does that work for you?(那樣你可以嗎?)不管在職場、跟朋友或家人約事情,大大小小的安排到處都聽得到這句。
M
Another big one, “Is this a good time?” You say that when you’re about to call someone or bring something up, checking if now works.另一句很常見的是 Is this a good time?(現在方便嗎?)打電話給人,或要開口講事情之前,先問一句確認現在可不可以。
J
If you’re the one who can’t make it, don’t say I’m not convenient. Say “I’m not available,” or just “I’m free” if you can make it.如果是自己沒辦法配合,不要說 I’m not convenient,要說 I’m not available(我沒空),如果可以配合就說 I’m free(我有空)。
M
And if something comes up at the last minute, say “that doesn’t work for me,” instead of trying to force the word convenient into the sentence again.如果臨時 something comes up(有事發生),就說 that doesn’t work for me(那樣我不行),不要又硬把 convenient 這個字塞進句子裡。
J
For asking when someone’s actually open to meet, “When works for you?” is the natural choice. It’s nice and short, and everyone you meet says it exactly like that.要問對方什麼時候真的有空,最自然的講法就是 When works for you?(你什麼時候方便?)又短又順口,你遇到的每個人都是這樣講。
M
Quick bonus round, two more phrases that fix a related problem. When you want to ask a favor politely, the Chinese phrase that literally means “if it’s convenient,” don’t reach for convenient either.來個小加碼,再教兩句相關的說法。想客氣地拜託人、講中文的「方便的話」,英文一樣不要直接想到 convenient。
J
Say “if it’s not too much trouble,” or “when you get a chance.” Both mean the same thing, asking someone nicely without pressure.可以說 if it’s not too much trouble(如果不會太麻煩的話),或 when you get a chance(有空的時候)。這兩句都跟「方便的話」意思一樣,客氣地拜託對方,不會給壓力。
M
And when you don’t want to say something, in Chinese that’s literally “not convenient to say.” In English, that’s “I’d rather not say.” Just that one simple phrase. Oh, and “at your convenience” is correct and pretty formal, the kind of thing you’d write in an email.而「不方便說」,也就是不想講某件事的時候,英文是 I’d rather not say(我寧可不說),不是硬翻成 it’s not convenient to say,就這一句簡單的說法。對了,at your convenience(在你方便的時候)倒是正確用法,而且比較正式,像寫 email 就會用到。
J
Okay, so a quick recap before we head back to Rachel and Eric one more time. Convenient describes a time, a thing, or a place, never the person themselves.好,回到 Rachel 和 Eric 的對話之前,先快速整理一下。Convenient 形容的是時間、事情、地點,從來不是那個「方便」的人本身。
M
The person goes after “for,” like “is that convenient for you,” and that sentence is totally fine. What’s wrong is making the person the convenient one, like “are you convenient.”人要放在 for 後面,像 is that convenient for you,這句完全沒問題。錯的是把「人」當成那個方便的角色,像 are you convenient 這樣講。
J
For everyday talk, reach for “does that work for you,” “is this a good time,” “I’m available,” “I’m free,” or “when works for you.” Those cover almost every situation.日常對話就多用 does that work for you、is this a good time、I’m available、I’m free,或 when works for you,這幾句幾乎涵蓋所有情況。
M
Alright, we’re about done here. Let’s hear Rachel and Eric one more time, and this time, listen for how Eric keeps moving the person after “for.”好,我們差不多要進尾聲了。再聽一次 Rachel 和 Eric 的對話,這次注意聽 Eric 怎麼一直把「人」移到 for 後面。
🔁 [DIALOGUE REPLAY] 重播情境對話
J
Hearing it again like that, you can really catch it now, the time is convenient, the room is convenient, and Rachel and Eric are just sitting right after the word “for.”再聽一次是不是更清楚了?方便的是時間、是會議室,Rachel 和 Eric 兩個人都只是乖乖坐在 for 後面而已。
M
So tell us in the comments, what’s a “convenient” sentence you’ve translated word for word before, maybe without even noticing it was wrong? We’d love to hear it.留言告訴我們,你是不是也講過哪句「方便」直翻的句子,可能講的時候完全沒發現不對?我們很想聽聽看。

Alright, that wraps up MJ English for today.好,今天的 MJ英語 就到這裡。
