2026 09 11 en saying numbers 3 Daily English |

Dialogue

Tom

Can you read me the client’s number? I’ll type it in.

Lisa

Sure. Five hundred fifty-five, one thousand two hundred thirty-four.

Tom

Ha — say it digit by digit: five five five, one two three four. Way easier to follow.

哈——一個字一個字念:five five five、one two three four。

Lisa

Got it. Five five five, one two three four. And the area code is two zero six?

Five five five、one two three four。區碼是 two zero six?

Tom

Yep — most people say two oh six. Zero works too, but oh sounds more natural.

Lisa

Okay. Now the quote — the unit price is nine point six zero dollars.

Tom

We’d just say nine sixty. And nine dollars and six cents would be nine oh six.

我們會直接說 nine sixty($9.60)。

Lisa

Nine sixty. Perfect. Last thing — the contract runs through two zero two six.

Nine sixty,好。最後——合約到 two zero two six。

Tom

Twenty twenty-six. Years come in two chunks — like nineteen ninety-nine, twenty twenty-six.

Twenty twenty-six。

Lisa

Twenty twenty-six. Okay, I’m never reading numbers the Taiwan way again.

Twenty twenty-six。

③$9.60=nine sixty
④$9.06=nine oh six
⑤2026=twenty twenty-six
⑥1999=nineteen ninety-nine
302=three oh two

Next Time

Five hundred fifty-five, one thousand two hundred thirty-four.

Five five five, one two three four.

Nine point six zero dollars.

Nine sixty.

Two zero two six.

Twenty twenty-six.

Vocabulary Boost

What’s the area code for Seattle?(西雅圖的區碼是多少?)

oh/oʊ/

Sentence Patterns

Two oh six, five five five, one two three four.(206-555-1234。)
例:My number is four one five, five five five, oh one oh one.(我的電話是 415-555-0101。)
例:Can you repeat the last four digits?(可以再說一次最後四碼嗎?)

That’ll be nine sixty.(一共九塊六。)
例:It’s twelve fifty with tax.(含稅十二塊五。)

2026 是 twenty twenty-six,1999 是 nineteen ninety-nine;2000–2009 念 two thousand X。

例:I moved here in twenty twenty-four.(我 2024 年搬來的。)
例:The company was founded in nineteen ninety-eight.(公司 1998 年成立。)
例:That was back in two thousand five.(那是 2005 年的事了。)

房號 302 念 three oh two。

例:The meeting room is on the twelfth floor.(會議室在十二樓。)
例:I’m in room three oh two.(我在 302 房。)
例:Take the elevator to the fourth floor.(搭電梯到四樓。)

Sorry, was that fifteen or fifty?(抱歉,是 15 還是 50?)
例:Can you say the area code again?(區碼可以再說一次嗎?)
例:Let me read it back to you: five five five, one two three four.(我複誦一次:555-1234。)

Transcript

J
Okay so, nine sixty. If I show you that price, you know exactly what it costs, right? But say it out loud in English, and that’s exactly where most people trip up. I’m Jason.好,先丟一個數字,nine sixty(也就是$9.60)。
M
Yeah, and it’s not that people don’t understand the number. They totally do the math in their head just fine. It’s the saying part that gets messy. I’m Mary.
J
That’s really the whole problem today. You can do the math, no issue there. It’s just that English has these fixed patterns for saying numbers, and Mandarin doesn’t work that way at all.
M
So that’s what we’re doing today. Four situations where this trips people up: phone numbers, prices, years, and floor or room numbers. Let’s go through them one by one.
J
First up, phone numbers. In English, you don’t read the whole thing as one big number. You say it digit by digit, in three groups: area code, then three, then four.
M
So if the number’s two oh six, five five five, one two three four, you’d break it into three little groups: two oh six, five five five, one two three four.假設號碼是 206、555、1234,你會拆成三小組來講:two oh six、five five five、one two three four(oh 就是英文字母 O 的唸法,代表 0)。
J
And that zero in the area code? Most people just say oh. Two oh six sounds way more natural than two zero six, even though zero is technically fine too. 大家通常唸 oh、不唸 zero——206 唸成 two oh six,比 two zero six 自然很多,不過 zero 也不算錯。
M
Zero’s actually clearer if the line’s bad or someone’s writing it down fast. But in normal chatting, oh is what you’ll hear most of the time.
J
Next, prices. This one trips people up because in Mandarin you just read the number straight. In English, the dollars and the cents kind of run together as one phrase.
M
So nine sixty, that’s it, that’s the whole price. You don’t say nine point six zero, and you don’t say nine dollars and sixty cents unless you’re being really formal.
J
Same idea with twelve fifty, dollars first, then cents, no point, no dollar sign spoken out loud, it just sounds like one smooth, natural number.twelve fifty(也就是$12.50)也是同樣邏輯,元在前分在後,不加point、也不用真的唸出dollar這個字,聽起來就是一串很順的數字。
M
And watch this one, nine oh six is different from nine sixty, nine oh six means nine dollars and six cents, that oh in the middle really matters.
J
If it’s under a dollar, you just say the cents, like ninety-nine cents. And here’s a funny twist: twelve fifty can also mean one thousand two hundred fifty dollars, and people still just say twelve fifty either way, so you figure out the size from context.
M
Okay, years now. English splits years into two chunks instead of reading the whole number, twenty twenty-six, not two thousand twenty-six, even though that’s technically correct too.
J
Same pattern going backward, nineteen ninety-nine. Two chunks, nineteen, then ninety-nine. Your brain just learns to hear years in pairs like that after a while.
M
But here’s the twist, the two thousands break the pattern. Two thousand five, for example — most people don’t say twenty oh five, it just sounds off.
J
So the rule of thumb is, split it into two chunks unless it’s one of those early two-thousands years, then you just read it as one number.
M
Now, floors and room numbers. In the US, first floor means the ground floor, exactly the same as what you’re already used to back home in Taiwan.
J
But in the UK, first floor is actually one flight up, ground floor is its own separate thing down there, so if you’re traveling, that mix-up can actually send you to the wrong floor.
M
And room numbers work like phone numbers, digit by digit. Room three oh two, you’d say three oh two, not three hundred two. Also, a lot of US buildings just skip the thirteenth floor entirely.
J
Okay, here’s the one thing that messes up listening more than anything else, fifteen versus fifty. They sound almost the same if you’re not paying close attention.
M
Honestly, even native speakers mix those up sometimes on the phone, especially with background noise. The stress is just really subtle between fifteen and fifty.
J
So here’s fix number one, just ask, straight up. Say something like, sorry, was that fifteen or fifty? Nobody thinks that’s a weird question to ask.第一個解法就是直接問,像sorry, was that fifteen or fifty?(不好意思,你剛剛說的是15還是50?)
M
Fix number two, read it back to them. Just say, let me read that back to you, and repeat the number. That way you both catch the mistake before it becomes a problem.
J
Here’s the thing that actually makes all this click, phone numbers split apart into single digits, but years clump together into two chunks. Totally opposite directions, and that’s exactly why people mix them up.
M
So try this right now, say your own phone number out loud, digit by digit, with a little pause in the middle. See how different that feels from just reading the number straight through.
J
Okay, so that’s all four situations covered, phones, prices, years, and floors. Let’s do one last thing together before we wrap up today’s episode.
M
Let’s hear Lisa and Tom’s whole conversation one more time, and really listen for the exact moment each number clicks into place for both of them.
🔁 [DIALOGUE REPLAY]
J
Second time through, it’s really just four patterns, phones split apart, prices run together, years clump in two, and first floor means ground floor.
