Leo: Yeah, I heard. I’m all for it! Who wouldn’t want an extra day off?
Emma: I get that, but won’t it affect productivity?
Leo: Not really. Studies show shorter workweeks can boost performance.
Emma: Hmm, I’m on the fence. It sounds great, but I’m worried about deadlines.
Leo: You’re overthinking it. We’ll be fine.
Emma: Maybe. But I know our manager will never agree.
Leo: Yeah, he’s totally against anything that sounds “too modern.”
Emma: Still, I think the younger staff will second the idea.
Leo: True! Most people are in favor of better work-life balance.
Emma: Okay, fine. I’ll support it if we still get paid the same.

📖 Transcript

J: Welcome to MJ English.

So, have you ever been in that situation where you feel, you know, really strongly about something?

M: Oh, yeah, like you’re completely passionate about an idea, or maybe you’re totally against it.

J: Exactly. But then the only English phrases that come to mind are just, “I agree,” or “I disagree.”

M: And it feels so flat, right? Native speakers just, they don’t really talk like that. They use all these shades of opinion, enthusiasm, hesitation.

J: Right. So today we’re going to listen to a quick workplace chat and pull out those key phrases so you can sound much more natural.

M: Let’s do it. The conversation is between two co-workers, Emma and Leo, talking about a proposed three-day weekend.

Emma:
Leo:

J: Okay, great little dialogue. The first thing that just jumps right out is Leo’s immediate reaction.

M: “I’m all for it.”
「I’m all for it.」(我超贊成。)

J: Yes. It’s like so much more powerful than, “I agree.” It has this real energy.

M: It shows you’re not just agreeing, you’re genuinely excited. It’s full commitment.

J: And later, Leo says, “Most people are in favor of a better work-life balance.” How is that different?
而後面 Leo 說了「Most people are in favor of a better work-life balance」。

M: Well, “in favor of” is great for talking about group opinions. It’s a little more formal and perfect for, you know, policies or general ideas.

J: Okay, so it’s less about personal excitement and more about general support.

M: And speaking of support, Emma used another great one: “second the idea.”

J: Right. That one sounds a bit formal, like from a meeting.

M: It does, but you hear it used informally all the time. It just means, “Hey, that person had a good idea, and I support it too.”

J: Okay, let’s switch gears to disagreement. Or, well, not quite disagreement. Emma says, “I’m on the fence.”
Emma 說:「I’m on the fence.」

M: I love that phrase. It creates such a clear picture. You’re undecided, stuck in the middle.

J: It’s a perfect way to show you see both sides of an issue without committing.

M: And for when you have committed to opposition, they say the manager is “totally against it.”

J: That word “totally” really adds the punch, doesn’t it?

M: It really does. It makes the feeling so much stronger. You could say “strongly against,” but “totally” is just so, conversational.

J: And we also got a couple of key workplace phrases in there.

M: Yeah, “affect productivity” and “boost performance.”

J: Those are essential.

M: Yeah. Any debate about work change is gonna use those.

J: And we can’t forget Leo’s line, “You’re overthinking it.”
還有不能忘記 Leo 說的:「You’re overthinking it.」(你想太多了。)

M: A classic.

J: A nice, casual way to tell someone to relax a little.

M: Now, what if the situation is even more complicated?

J: We have a couple of structured phrases for that. First, if you want to show you’re balanced, you can always say something like, “There are both advantages and disadvantages to this idea.”
如果你想表達自己是「站在很平衡的角度」,你可以說:「There are both advantages and disadvantages to this idea.」(這個提議有優點也有缺點。)

M: That shows you’ve really thought it through. But what if you just can’t agree?

J: Then you need a polite exit. You just say, “Let’s agree to disagree,” and then you can move on. It saves the conversation.

M: Perfect. So, at the end of the day, using these little phrases is what makes your English sound so much more dynamic.

J: You’re showing your true feelings, not just giving a simple yes or no.

M: These are things you can use immediately, so, you know, try one out this week.
