JPicture a Saturday night market. Hot oil sizzling, music everywhere, somebody’s elbow in your side, and the smell of fried chicken in the air. Welcome, everyone! I’m Jason, and today we’re talking about how to say “so many people” in English.想像一下週六晚上的夜市。熱油滋滋響、到處都是音樂、有人的手肘頂到你的腰,空氣裡滿是炸雞的香味。大家好!我是 Jason,今天要聊的是「人很多」英文怎麼說。
MAnd I’m Mary. Oh, I know that feeling. Shoulders bumping, nobody can walk fast, and you’re holding your bubble tea over your head. Today’s story happens right there, with Amy and her American friend Mark, who’s here for the first time.我是 Mary。喔,那種感覺我懂。肩膀一直撞到、沒人走得快,你還得把珍奶舉到頭上。今天的故事就發生在那裡,主角是 Amy 和她的美國朋友 Mark,Mark 是第一次來。
JAmy wants Mark to try pepper buns. They’re those hot, peppery buns from the oven, so good. They walk in, and Amy says, “Here we are, Raohe Night Market! Wow, people mountain people sea!”Amy 想帶 Mark 吃胡椒餅,就是剛出爐、熱騰騰又很香的那種,超好吃。他們走進夜市,Amy 說:「Here we are, Raohe Night Market! Wow, people mountain people sea!」
MAnd Mark has no idea what that means. He says, “People mountain… what? Oh, you mean it’s packed!” He guessed right, but only because he could see the crowd.但 Mark 完全不知道那是什麼意思。他說:「People mountain… what? Oh, you mean it’s packed!」他猜對了,不過那只是因為他看得到人潮。
JHere’s the thing. “People mountain people sea” is a word-for-word copy of a Chinese saying. It’s a famous joke online. A native speaker hears it and thinks, mountain? Sea? Where? It doesn’t mean anything in English.重點來了。「people mountain people sea」是把中文成語一個字一個字照翻,在網路上是很有名的笑話。母語人士聽到會想:山?海?在哪?這在英文裡沒有任何意思。
MSo what do we say instead? The easiest one is, “It’s so crowded.” Simple, polite, works anywhere. You can use it for a train, a shop, or a night market. “It’s so crowded tonight.”那我們該怎麼說呢?最簡單的是「It’s so crowded.」簡單、禮貌,哪裡都能用。火車、商店、夜市都可以。「It’s so crowded tonight.」
JWant something stronger? Say, “It’s packed.” Packed means filled up, like a suitcase before a trip. And if it’s really, really full, say, “It’s jam-packed.” Jam here means squeezed tight, like people jammed on a train.想講得更強烈一點嗎?說「It’s packed.」packed 就是裝滿了,像出門前塞好的行李箱。如果真的滿到不行,就說「It’s jam-packed.」這裡的 jam 是擠得緊緊的意思,像人擠滿整節車廂,一點空間都不剩。
MNext, Amy’s second mistake. She says, “There have so many people tonight.” That one is wrong, and it’s super common. In Chinese, one little word means both have and there is. English splits them up.接下來是 Amy 的第二個錯誤。她說:「There have so many people tonight.」這句是錯的,而且超常見。中文裡有一個小小的字,同時可以是 have 也可以是 there is,英文則把兩個分開。
JRight. “Have” means you own something. “I have two tickets.” “I have a pepper bun.” But for what exists in a place, we say there is or there are. “There are so many people.” Easy to memorize.沒錯。「have」是你擁有某樣東西。「I have two tickets.」「I have a pepper bun.」但說某個地方有什麼,要用 there is 或 there are。「There are so many people.」很好背。
MAnd Mark says exactly that. He says, “But in English, we’d say there are so many people. Or just, it’s so crowded.” He doesn’t scold her. He just gives her the better line, and Amy says, “Got it. It’s so crowded tonight.”Mark 就是這樣說的。他說:「But in English, we’d say there are so many people. Or just, it’s so crowded.」他沒有責備她,只是給她更好的說法,然後 Amy 說:「Got it. It’s so crowded tonight.」
JThen Amy adds, “Saturdays are always like this.” And Mark answers, “No kidding. It’s a zoo in here! Where’s the pepper bun stand?” A zoo is full of animals, noise, and chaos. Sounds like a night market, right?接著 Amy 說:「Saturdays are always like this.」Mark 回答:「No kidding. It’s a zoo in here! Where’s the pepper bun stand?」動物園裡到處是動物、噪音和混亂。聽起來就像夜市,對吧?
MAmy is confused. She says, “A zoo? There are no animals here!” Mark explains, “Ha, it’s just a saying. It’s a zoo means it’s crazy busy.” So it’s a fun way to say loud, crowded, and a little wild.Amy 一頭霧水。她說:「A zoo? There are no animals here!」Mark 解釋:「Ha, it’s just a saying. It’s a zoo means it’s crazy busy.」所以這是一種有趣的說法,形容又吵、又擠、又有點瘋狂。
JOne small warning. “It’s a zoo” is casual. Use it with friends, family, or coworkers you’re close to. At a formal dinner, or in a work email, stick with “It’s very crowded.” Safe and polite.提醒一下。「It’s a zoo」是很口語的說法,跟朋友、家人或很熟的同事可以用。正式的晚宴或工作 email,就用「It’s very crowded.」比較安全、有禮貌。
MLast weekend I took my cousin to a concert in Taipei, and I told her, “It’s a zoo in here!” She laughed so hard. It’s perfect for friends and family. Maybe not for your boss, though.上週末我帶表妹去台北看演唱會,我對她說:「It’s a zoo in here!」她笑得好大聲。這句很適合對朋友和家人說,不過對老闆就先不要了。
JNow a nice little extra. The word “busy” can describe a place, not only a person. “The night market is so busy tonight.” It means lots of people, lots of life.再補充一個小東西。busy 不只能形容人,也可以形容地方。「The night market is so busy tonight.」意思是人很多、很熱鬧。
MThen Amy says, “Oh, I like that. Okay, follow me. The line for pepper buns is huge.” Line here means a row of people waiting. “The line is huge” is a handy sentence for any popular food stand.然後 Amy 說:「Oh, I like that. Okay, follow me. The line for pepper buns is huge.」這裡的 line 是排隊的人龍。「The line is huge.」這句拿來形容任何熱門的小吃攤都很好用。
JAnd Mark says, “Then let’s go now, before it gets even more packed.” See that? He uses packed in a very natural way. Getting more packed just means more and more people are coming in.Mark 說:「Then let’s go now, before it gets even more packed.」注意到了嗎?他用 packed 用得很自然。變得更 packed,就是越來越多人湧進來。
MOkay, here’s my favorite part. Is “a sea of people” real English? Yes! It really is. It means a huge crowd, like waves of heads. So the sea part is fine. It’s only the mountain that doesn’t travel well.好,這是我最喜歡的部分。「a sea of people」是真的英文嗎?是的!它真的是。意思是一大群人,像一波一波的人頭。所以「海」的部分沒問題,只有「山」走不出國門。
JRight! So you can say, “There was a sea of people at the concert.” Just leave the mountain at home. Nobody says “people mountain people sea” in English, so don’t worry about sounding fancy.對!所以你可以說:「There was a sea of people at the concert.」山就留在家裡吧。英文沒人說「people mountain people sea」,所以不用擔心不夠華麗。
MWhat about the opposite, when a place is empty? Casual English says, “It’s dead in here.” Dead just means very quiet, nobody around. Not scary at all.那反過來,地方很空的時候呢?口語英文會說:「It’s dead in here.」這裡的 dead 只是很冷清、沒什麼人,一點都不可怕。
JAnd a softer way is, “It’s pretty quiet tonight.” Polite and gentle. Good for people you don’t know well. Dead is casual, quiet is safe. Both mean not many people.比較溫和的說法是「It’s pretty quiet tonight.」禮貌又柔和,對不熟的人說時很合適。dead 比較口語,quiet 比較保險,兩個都是人不多的意思。
MNow let’s hear the whole story together, without stopping. Pay attention to how Mark fixes things in such a friendly way, and notice how smoothly it all flows when two friends are just chatting.現在我們一口氣把整段故事聽完,中間不停。注意 Mark 糾正得多麼親切,也感受一下兩個朋友聊天時有多順。
JAnd remember, this is the same conversation you just heard in pieces. Amy will still make her two little mistakes, and Mark will still help her. You already know the better lines now.還有,這就是你剛剛分段聽過的同一段對話。Amy 還是會犯那兩個小錯,Mark 還是會幫她。你現在已經知道更好的說法了。
MOkay, volume up. Get comfy, grab a snack if you like, and enjoy the whole thing straight through from the very top. Here it is.好,把音量調大。坐舒服一點,想的話拿點零食,從頭到尾好好享受。來囉。
🔁 [DIALOGUE REPLAY] 重播情境對話
JQuick takeaway. It’s the same conversation, so Amy still says “people mountain people sea” and “There have so many people.” Now you know the better lines: crowded, packed, and there are.簡單總結。這是同一段對話,所以 Amy 還是會說「people mountain people sea」和「There have so many people.」但你現在知道更好的說法了:crowded、packed 和 there are。
