You're on mute

聲音斷斷續續說 You’re breaking up.,沒聽清楚說 Could you say that again?

Sorry, I was on mute.;聲音斷斷續續說 You’re breaking up.;畫面卡住說 You froze.;沒聽清楚說 Could you say that again?

Your microphone is closed. → You’re on mute.;② Your internet is very bad. → You’re breaking up.;③ Please say again. → Could you say that again?

Amy

Hi, Ryan! Good morning. Ryan? I can’t hear you. Your microphone is closed.

(要說 You’re on mute)

Ryan

Oh, sorry! I was on mute. Can you hear me now?

Amy

Yes, loud and clear. Let me share my screen. Can you see it?

Ryan

Yep, I can see it. So, the client wants the final report by Friday, and they also asked about the budget.

Amy

Sorry, Ryan, your internet is very bad.

(太直接,要說 You’re breaking up)

Ryan

Ah, I think I’m breaking up. My Wi-Fi is acting up today. Is this any better?

Amy

A little. Please say again the last part.

Could you say that again?)

Ryan

Sure, no problem. I said the client wants the final report by Friday.

Amy

Got it, Friday. Oh, wait. I think you froze.

Ryan

Let me turn off my camera. That should help. Better now?

Amy

Much better! I’ll send you the draft after lunch.

Ryan

Sounds great. Thanks, Amy. Talk to you later!

Next Time

Your microphone is closed.

You’re on mute.

Sorry, I was on mute.

Your internet is very bad.

You’re breaking up.

Please say again.

Could you say that again?

為什麼:say 後面要有 that,前面加 Could you 才有禮貌。

Sentence Patterns

You’re on mute.

別說 microphone is closed,線上會議固定說 on mute。

例:”Ryan, you’re on mute.”(「Ryan,你靜音了。」)
例:”I think you’re muted.”(「你好像靜音了。」)
例:”Oh, sorry! I was on mute.”(「喔抱歉!
Sorry, I was on mute.

You’re breaking up.

Sorry, you’re breaking up a little.”(「抱歉,你聲音有點斷斷續續。」)
例:”You cut out for a second.”(「你剛剛斷掉了一下。」)
例:”My Wi-Fi is acting up today.”(「我的 Wi-Fi 今天怪怪的。」)
Your internet is very bad 太直接,像在指責對方,breaking up 客氣多了。

Could you say that again?

Please say again 是中文直翻,加 Could you 和 that 才自然。

例:”Sorry, could you say that again?”(「抱歉,可以再說一次嗎?」)
例:”I missed the last part.”(「我漏聽了最後那段。」)
例:”Could you repeat the part about Friday?”(「可以再講一次星期五那段嗎?」)
Please say again 是中文直翻,加 Could you 和 that 才自然。

I think you froze.

Oh, wait. I think you froze.”(「喔等等,你畫面好像卡住了。」)
例:”Your screen is frozen.”(「你的畫面卡住了。」)
例:”Let me turn off my camera. That should help.”(「我關掉鏡頭,應該會好一點。」)
Let me leave and rejoin.(我退出再重新進來。)

Can you hear me okay?

Can you hear me okay?”(「聽得到我嗎?」)
例:”Can everyone see my screen?”(「大家看得到我的螢幕嗎?」)

J
Hi, I’m Jason, and welcome to MJ English. Okay, confession time. Last week I talked for five full minutes in a video call, and nobody said a word back. Turns out I was on mute the whole time. Everyone just watched my mouth move.
M
Oh no, I’ve done that too! Hi, I’m Mary. Honestly, everyone has. So today we’re talking about video-call emergencies at work. Someone’s on mute, the audio breaks up, the screen freezes. What do you say when that happens?
J
Today’s story is about Amy in Taipei and her coworker Ryan in Seattle. It’s Monday morning, and they’re on a video call. Amy makes three Chinglish mistakes, and Ryan uses the natural phrases without even thinking about it.
M
Okay, first one. Amy can’t hear Ryan, so she says, “Your microphone is closed.” We understand the idea, but English speakers don’t say it that way. In Chinese we say the microphone is off, so it feels natural, right? Amy 聽不到 Ryan,所以她說:Your microphone is closed.
J
Right. The natural way is, “You’re on mute.” You can also say, “I think you’re muted.” Both are super common. And Ryan says, “Oh, sorry! I was on mute. Can you hear me now?” That’s exactly what you’d say too.對。自然的說法是You’re on mute. I think you’re muted. Oh, sorry! I was on mute. Can you hear me now?
M
And if you’re the one who forgot, just say, “Sorry, I was on mute.” Don’t be embarrassed. Everyone has done it, so laugh it off and keep going. Honestly, a little laugh makes the whole meeting feel warmer and more relaxed. Sorry, I was on mute.
J
Next, Amy says, “Sorry, Ryan, your internet is very bad.” Now, it might be true, but it sounds like she’s blaming him. Like it’s his fault. And nobody wants to feel blamed at nine a.m. on a Monday, right?接著 Amy 說:Sorry, Ryan, your internet is very bad.
M
So what do we say instead? “You’re breaking up.” That only describes the sound. It doesn’t blame anybody. You can also say, “You cut out for a second.” Same idea: the sound dropped out for a moment. You’re breaking up. You cut out for a second.
J
And here’s a little joke. “You’re breaking up” does not mean someone is breaking up with you! Not in a meeting, anyway. Ryan answers, “I think I’m breaking up. My Wi-Fi is acting up today.” Acting up means it’s not working well. You’re breaking up不是有人要跟你分手喔! I think I’m breaking up. My Wi-Fi is acting up today.acting up 就是運作得不太正常。
M
Ha, that would be a really bad Monday. Okay, third mistake. Amy says, “Please say again the last part.” It’s a direct translation from Chinese, so it sounds a bit stiff and a little strange to native ears. Please say again the last part.
J
Here’s the fix. Say, “Could you say that again?” Two things to notice. “Say” needs “that” after it. And “Could you” makes the sentence polite. You can also say, “I missed the last part.” That works great too. Could you say that again?有兩個重點:say 後面要接 that;而 Could you 會讓句子比較禮貌。 I missed the last part.
M
In the story, Ryan answers, “Sure, no problem. I said the client wants the final report by Friday.” See how friendly he sounds? He doesn’t mind repeating it at all. That’s exactly the kind of reply you want from a coworker. Sure, no problem. I said the client wants the final report by Friday.
J
Now, the screen freezes. Amy says, “I think you froze.” Froze is the past of freeze. You can also say, “Your screen is frozen.” Both are normal. Think of a frozen picture, like it’s stuck in ice. I think you froze.froze 是 freeze 的過去式。你也可以說Your screen is frozen.
M
And what’s the fix? Ryan says, “Let me turn off my camera.” Turning off the video uses less data, so it often helps. If it keeps happening, a bonus phrase is, “Let me leave and rejoin.” Quick and easy. Let me turn off my camera. Let me leave and rejoin.
J
Last tip, and it’s my favorite. Before you start talking, check first. Say, “Can you hear me okay?” Or if you’re sharing, “Can everyone see my screen?” That could have saved me five minutes of talking to nobody. Can you hear me okay? Can everyone see my screen?
M
Ha, yes! And if someone asks you, a great answer is, “Yes, loud and clear.” That means I can hear you very well. Amy says it in the story, and it’s a nice, confident way to say everything is fine.
J
Let’s put it together. On mute? “You’re on mute.” Audio cutting out? “You’re breaking up.” Missed something? “Could you say that again?” Screen stuck? “I think you froze.” Short, simple, and nobody feels blamed. You’re on mute. You’re breaking up. Could you say that again?畫面卡住?I think you froze.
M
I like that. And these are for real life, not only for tests. Next Monday, try one of them in your own meeting. Even one phrase will make you sound more natural and more relaxed on camera.
J
Totally. Don’t try to use all of them at once. Pick the one you need most. For me, it’s “Can you hear me okay?” Now I check before I say anything, and my coworkers are very happy about it. Can you hear me okay?
M
Same here. I say, “Sorry, I was on mute,” all the time, because I forget all the time! It’s so common that people just smile, and the meeting moves on. Nobody remembers it five minutes later. Sorry, I was on mute.
J
Okay, we’re almost done. Amy made three small mistakes, and now you know every fix. Ready to hear how Amy and Ryan sound together in the real flow of a meeting?
M
Let’s hear the whole conversation one more time. This time, listen for all five phrases we talked about today, and see how many of them you can catch. Here we go!

The second time through, you’ll notice how short and easy these phrases are. Ryan never sounds nervous, and neither will you. Listen for on mute, breaking up, say that again, and froze. 注意聽 on mute、breaking up、say that again,還有 froze。
