企業黑話（buzzwords）多半是「委婉包裝」——用一個花俏的說法，包住一句其實很簡單的話。聽懂訣竅就是：問自己「他到底在講什麼？」這些字連 TED 演講都滿天飛，職場更是天天用。

台灣人最容易卡的雷：不是不會單字，是「聽不出它其實在婉轉表達什麼」——例如 circle back 常常＝「現在沒人有答案，先擱著」。

場景：剛開完一場黑話連發的會，職場新人 Nina 一頭霧水，同事 Mark 幫她一句句翻譯。

Nina

That meeting was exhausting. What does “let’s circle back” even mean?

那場會議累死了。「let’s circle back」到底是什麼意思啊？

Mark

Ha, it just means “we’ll talk about it later” — usually when no one has an answer.

哈，就是「我們之後再談」——通常是當下沒人有答案的時候。

Nina

And “take this offline”? We were already offline, in a room.

那「take this offline」呢？我們本來就在會議室、又沒上線。

Mark

It means “let’s discuss it privately,” not in front of everyone.

意思是「我們私下談」，別在大家面前講。

Nina

So much jargon. Sarah said we need to “move the needle” this quarter.

好多術語。Sarah 說我們這一季要「move the needle」。

Mark

That’s just “make a real difference.” A fancy way of saying do something that matters.

那就是「做出實質改變」。花俏一點的說法，其實就是做點真的有用的事。

Nina

And she wants to “touch base” on Friday. Are we playing baseball?

她還說禮拜五要「touch base」。我們是要打棒球呢？

Mark

Ha, no — it means a quick check-in, a short chat to see where things stand.

哈，不是——就是快速同步一下、簡短聊聊進度到哪。

Nina

Honestly, why not just say that? “I don’t have the bandwidth for this.”

說真的，幹嘛不直接講就好？「I don’t have the bandwidth for this」。

Mark

See, now you’re fluent! Bandwidth just means your time and energy.

你看，你已經很溜了！bandwidth 就是你的時間和心力。

Nina

Okay, last one. She’ll “loop me in” on the email. Loop me into what?

好，最後一個。她說會「loop me in」那封 email。是要把我 loop 進什麼？

Mark

It means she’ll add you to the thread. Welcome to corporate English.

意思是她會把你加進那串信。歡迎來到企業英文的世界。

為什麼：職場慣用 circle back（之後再繞回來談），比 discuss in the future 自然、又留了台階。

為什麼：take this offline＝「移到會議外私下講」，跟網路無關，是超常見的婉轉說法。

為什麼：bandwidth＝時間＋心力，說 low on bandwidth 聽起來專業冷靜，不像「我快忙死了」那麼狼狽。

把某人加進來、讓某人知情（常指 cc 進郵件串）。keep sb in the loop＝讓某人持續知情。

I’ll loop you in on the email.（我會把你加進那封信。）

jargon/ˈdʒɑr.ɡən/ 名詞

行話、術語（某圈子專用、外人聽不懂的話）。不可數。

Corporate jargon can be confusing.（企業行話很容易讓人一頭霧水。）

check-in/ˈtʃɛk.ɪn/ 名詞

簡短的進度確認、碰一下。動詞用 check in（with sb）。

Let’s do a quick check-in tomorrow.（明天快速確認一下進度。）

thread/θrɛd/ 名詞

（同主題的）郵件討論串、對話串。

I’ll add you to the email thread.（我把你加進那串信。）

企業的、公司文化的（corporate English＝那套公司行話）。

會議上想先擱置某議題、留待之後，最順口的說法。

例：Let’s circle back on the budget later.（預算的事我們晚點再談。）
例：Can we circle back to your point?（可以回到你剛剛那個點嗎？）
例：We’ll circle back once we have data.（等有數據我們再回來談。）

聽到別人 circle back，多半代表「這題先放著」，別以為一定會馬上回來。

2. Can we take this offline? → 這個私下談好嗎

不想在整個會議上談某件事（太細、太敏感）時用。

例：Let’s take this offline after the call.（這個我們通話後私下談。）
例：Can you and I take this offline?（我們兩個私下談好嗎？）
例：Good point — let’s take it offline.（好想法——我們私下再談。）

offline 在這裡＝「會議之外」，不是「離線」；別照字面理解。

3. Let’s touch base (on ~) → 碰面／簡短同步

約一個快速的進度確認，不是正式大會。

例：Let’s touch base on Monday.（禮拜一我們同步一下。）
例：I’ll touch base with the team.（我會跟團隊碰一下。）
例：Let’s touch base on the timeline.（我們對一下時程。）

touch base 來自棒球「觸壘」，職場裡就是「碰個面、對一下」。

4. I don’t have the bandwidth (to ~) → 我沒餘裕～

要婉轉表示「忙不過來、無法接更多」時，比 no time 更專業冷靜。

例：I don’t have the bandwidth to take that on.（我沒餘裕再接那個。）
例：Do you have the bandwidth this week?（你這週有餘裕嗎？）
例：We’re low on bandwidth right now.（我們現在人力/心力吃緊。）

用 bandwidth 來婉拒或喊卡，聽起來像「產能滿了」而不是「我不想做」。

5. loop sb in / keep sb in the loop → 把某人加進來／讓某人知情

要把某人納入討論、或持續讓對方知道進度時用。

例：I’ll loop you in on the email.（我會把你加進那封信。）
例：Please keep me in the loop.（請讓我持續知道進度。）
例：Let’s loop in the design team.（我們把設計團隊也拉進來。）

loop 是「圈」——把人拉進資訊的圈子裡；out of the loop＝狀況外。

You’re sitting in a meeting, and the manager says, “let’s circle back, take it offline, and touch base on the low-hanging fruit.”你坐在會議裡，主管說：「let’s circle back, take it offline, and touch base on the low-hanging fruit」。And you’re just sitting there thinking — was any of that even English?而你就坐在那裡想——剛剛那串，有哪個字是英文嗎？I’m Jason, and today we’re translating corporate meeting jargon into plain, human English.我是 Jason，今天要把會議上的企業行話，翻成一般人聽得懂的白話英文。

I’m Mary, and here’s the little secret about most office buzzwords: they’re usually a polite, padded way of saying something very simple, and often something a bit awkward.我是 Mary，關於大多數辦公室黑話有個小祕密：它們通常是把一句很簡單、有時還有點尷尬的話，客氣地包裝起來。Once you know the plain-English version hiding underneath, meetings suddenly start to make sense.一旦你知道底下藏的那句白話版，開會突然就變得聽得懂了。In our conversation, Nina is brand new to corporate life, and Mark kindly decodes all of it for her.在我們的對話裡，Nina 是職場新鮮人，Mark 很好心地一句句幫她解碼。

The first one is the king of all jargon: “circle back.”第一個是所有行話之王：circle back。Nina asks what “let’s circle back” means, and Mark nails it — “we’ll talk about it later.”Nina 問「let’s circle back」是什麼意思，Mark 一針見血——「我們之後再談」。But here’s the real nuance: it very often means nobody has an answer right now, so we’re politely parking the whole thing for another day.但真正的眉角在這：它常常代表現在沒人有答案，所以就客氣地把整件事先擱到改天。

Exactly. It’s a graceful way to move on when things get stuck.沒錯。它是卡住時優雅帶過的方式。Then there’s “take this offline,” which confuses everyone, because you’re already in a room, offline.再來是「take this offline」，這個大家都搞不懂，因為你人本來就在會議室、又沒上線。It has nothing to do with the internet — it means “let’s discuss this privately, not in front of the whole group,” usually because it’s a side issue or a slightly sensitive one.它跟網路一點關係都沒有——意思是「我們私下談，別在全場面前講」，通常是因為那是支線議題、或有點敏感。

Next, Sarah wants to “move the needle.”接著，Sarah 想要「move the needle」。It’s a great image once you picture it — imagine a dial or a gauge with a needle on it.這個畫面想通了很傳神——想像一個有指針的儀表或刻度盤。To move the needle is to make a real, measurable difference, not just busywork.move the needle 就是做出真的、量得出來的改變，而不是瞎忙。If a task doesn’t move the needle, it doesn’t actually matter much.如果一件事不會讓指針動，那它其實沒那麼重要。

And my personal favorite for sounding needlessly sporty: “touch base.”而我個人最愛、聽起來莫名很運動的一個：touch base。Nina jokes about baseball, which is exactly where it comes from.Nina 開玩笑說是不是要打棒球，而它正是從棒球來的。But in an office it just means a quick check-in — a short chat to see where things stand.但在辦公室裡就只是快速同步一下——簡短聊聊進度到哪。“Let’s touch base on Friday” is simply “let’s have a quick catch-up on Friday.”「Let’s touch base on Friday」就是「禮拜五我們快速對一下」。

Then comes the one that literally sounds like a machine: “bandwidth.”再來這個聽起來根本像機器：bandwidth（頻寬）。Nina uses it perfectly — “I don’t have the bandwidth for this.”Nina 用得完美——「I don’t have the bandwidth for this」。Bandwidth is just your time and mental energy.bandwidth 就是你的時間和心力。Saying you’re low on bandwidth is a calm, professional way to say “I’m swamped, I can’t take on anything more.”說自己 low on bandwidth，是一種冷靜又專業的方式在講「我忙翻了，沒辦法再接了」。

And it’s such a handy one, because it sounds composed and capable instead of “I’m completely drowning.”而且這個超好用，因為它聽起來沉穩、有能力，而不是「我快滅頂了」。The last one Mark explains is “loop me in.”Mark 解釋的最後一個是「loop me in」。Nina wonders, loop me into what?Nina 納悶：要把我 loop 進什麼？It simply means “add me to the email thread” or “keep me informed.”它就只是「把我加進那串信」或「讓我持續知道狀況」。If someone says “I’ll loop you in,” you’re about to get cc’d on something.如果有人說「I’ll loop you in」，你就快要被 cc 進某件事了。

And what ties all of these together is that they’re softeners.而把這些全部串起來的共通點是：它們都是「緩衝詞」。Circle back softens “we don’t know.”circle back 緩和了「我們不知道」。Take this offline softens “not here, not now.”take this offline 緩和了「不是這裡、不是現在」。Bandwidth softens a flat “no.”bandwidth 緩和了直接的「不行」。Corporate English is very often just polite padding wrapped around a very plain message.企業英文常常就是把一句很白的話，用客氣的填充語包起來。

Right, and that’s actually the useful lesson for you as a learner.對，而這對身為學習者的你，其實是很有用的一課。You don’t have to love these phrases, but you do need to understand them, because your coworkers and your boss will use them constantly.你不用愛這些說法，但你一定要聽得懂，因為你的同事和老闆會一天到晚用。And dropping one or two naturally is what makes you sound like you truly belong on the team.而自然地丟出一兩句，就會讓你聽起來像是真的融入這個團隊。
