You know the hotel name, but how do you even start? “I… go… Grand Hotel?” It comes out clunky, the driver looks confused, and the whole ride feels awkward. Taxis and ride-shares are one of the first things you use abroad, and a handful of phrases make the whole thing smooth. I’m Jason, this is MJ English, and today we’re walking through one full taxi ride — from telling the driver where to go, to asking how long it’ll take, to paying and saying keep the change.
J: 你在陌生城市跳上計程車，司機回頭問 “Where are you headed?”（你要去哪？）——你腦袋一片空白。你知道飯店名字，但要怎麼開口？”I… go… Grand Hotel?” 講得卡卡的，司機一臉困惑，整趟車超尷尬。計程車和叫車是你出國最先會用到的場景之一，而只要幾句話就能讓全程變順。我是 Jason，這裡是 MJ English，今天我們走一遍完整的搭車過程——從告訴司機去哪、問要多久、到付款說 keep the change。

M: I’m Mary. And the great news is, a taxi conversation is short and totally predictable — the driver asks roughly the same things every time. It kicks off with the driver’s opening line: “Where are you headed?” Headed just means going — “Where are you headed?” is the friendly, natural way to ask “where to?” And Sophia answers with the single most important sentence of the whole ride: “Could you take me to the Grand Hotel downtown?” Take me to somewhere — that’s your go-to. Not “I go to Grand Hotel,” which sounds broken; “Could you take me to…” is polite, clear, and exactly right.
M: 我是 Mary。好消息是，搭車對話很短又超好預測——司機每次問的差不多就那些。一開場就是司機那句 “Where are you headed?”。Headed 就是「前往」——”Where are you headed?” 是問「要去哪」最friendly、最自然的說法。Sophia 用整趟最重要的一句回答：”Could you take me to the Grand Hotel downtown?”（可以帶我去市區的 Grand Hotel 嗎？）。take me to 某處——這是你的首選句。不是 “I go to Grand Hotel”，那聽起來怪怪的；”Could you take me to…” 有禮貌、清楚、完全正確。

J: Now a small one that trips a lot of people: getting out of the car. Sophia says, “Could you drop me off at the corner?” Drop off is the phrase for a car letting you out somewhere — the opposite is pick up, when the car collects you. Quick trap for us: with buses and trains we say “get off,” but in a taxi or an Uber, the natural verb is “drop off.” “Drop me off here,” “drop me off at the corner,” “you can drop me off right there.” One little phrase and you sound like a local passenger.
J: 來個很多人會卡的小地方：下車。Sophia 說 “Could you drop me off at the corner?”（可以在轉角放我下車嗎？）。Drop off 是「車子讓你在某處下車」——相反是 pick up（車子來接你）。我們的小陷阱：公車、火車我們說 “get off”，但計程車或 Uber，自然的動詞是 “drop off”。”Drop me off here”（這裡放我下車）、”drop me off at the corner”（轉角放我下車）、”you can drop me off right there”（那邊放我下車就好）。一個小句子，你就像在地乘客。

M: Next, the two questions every passenger wants answered. First, time: “How long will it take to get there?” Simple, polite, super useful — it works for anything, not just taxis. The driver says about twenty minutes. Then Sophia adds, “Could you take the fastest route? I’m running a little late.” Two gems there. The fastest route is exactly what it sounds like — the quickest way. And running late means you’re behind schedule, short on time — “Sorry, I’m running late” is one of the most-used phrases in English. The driver offers to “hop on the highway” — hop on just means get on, quickly.
M: 接著是每個乘客都想知道的兩個問題。第一，時間：”How long will it take to get there?”（到那要多久？）。簡單、有禮貌、超好用——什麼都能問，不只搭車。司機說大約 20 分鐘。然後 Sophia 補一句 “Could you take the fastest route? J: A couple of comfort and logistics phrases now. Sophia asks, “Can you turn the AC up a little?” Turn up means increase — turn it up for more, turn it down for less. It works for the AC, the heat, the music, the volume of anything. Then, as they arrive: “Could you pull over here?” Pull over is what a car does when it moves to the side of the road and stops. It’s the polite way to say “please stop the car here.” “Pull over at the corner,” “you can pull over right here” — smooth and natural.

Sophia hands over fifteen and says the magic line: “Keep the change.” Keep the change means “don’t give me the difference back — it’s yours,” a simple, friendly way to leave a small tip. Don’t translate it literally as “no need to find money” — just “keep the change.” And with apps like Uber, you’ll often rate the driver afterward, but a warm “thanks for the smooth ride” in person goes a long way too.
