「你應該」別直翻 You should!

同事抱怨睡不好,你好心想幫忙:“You should talk to your landlord. You should buy earplugs.”——對方臉上的笑容淡了,因為那聽起來不像建議,像在派工。

You might want to…/Have you tried…?/If I were you, I’d…。should 本身沒錯——問人 What should I do?

You should have checked before you signed.(你當初簽約前就該先看看那棟樓)——這在英文裡幾乎等於責備。母語者給建議時會先把話說軟:You might want to…(你或許可以)、You could always…(你也可以…)、Have you tried…?(你試過…嗎)、If I were you, I’d…(如果是我,我會)。 What should I do?、Should I bring anything?、You should get a confirmation email。

台灣人最容易卡的雷:① 連環 You should…(像派工)→ You might want to…;② 追加建議再一個 You should also… Have you tried…?;③ You should have…(責備過去)→ Next time you could…

Dialogue

Luke

Morning. Sorry, I’m a zombie today. My upstairs neighbor was moving furniture at midnight. Again.

Grace

Oh no. You should talk to your landlord.

Luke

Yeah, maybe.

Grace

And you should buy earplugs. You should have checked the building before you signed.

(連環 should + should have,變成責備)

Luke

Okay, ha, that’s a lot of shoulds. It kind of sounds like you’re handing me a to-do list.

Grace

Really? I was trying to help. In Chinese that’s just a normal suggestion.

Luke

I know you were. Here we’d soften it. You might want to message the landlord. Or, have you tried earplugs?

You might want to message the landlord(你或許可以傳訊息給房東)。或者 Have you tried earplugs?(你試過耳塞嗎?)

Grace

So should is bad? What should I do then, just never say it?

Luke

No, listen, you just used it perfectly. What should I do is fine. It’s you should, over and over, that sounds bossy. And you should have is basically blaming me.

What should I do 完全沒問題。問題是 you should 一直講,聽起來很愛指揮人;而 you should have 基本上就是在怪我。

Grace

Got it. If I were you, I’d message the landlord tonight. And a white noise machine might be worth a shot.

You might want to… / You could always… / Have you tried…? / If I were you, I’d…。should 用在問句(What should I do?) (You should get an email)完全自然;最該避開的是 You should have…(=責備過去)。

①建議=You might want to…
②也可以=You could always…
③換問句=Have you tried…?
④換位置=If I were you, I’d…
⑤值得試=might be worth a shot
⑥問人可以用=What should I do?
⑦講規則可以用=You should get an email
⑧別說 You should have…(責備)

Next Time

You should talk to your landlord.

You might want to talk to your landlord.

You should also buy earplugs.

Have you tried earplugs?

You should have checked before you signed.

Next time you could ask about the noise.

Sentence Patterns

You might want to… / You could always…

You might want to message the landlord.(你或許可以傳訊息給房東。)
例:You could always switch rooms.(你也可以換個房間。)
例:Maybe you could try the other pharmacy.(也許你可以試另一間藥局。)

Have you tried…? / What if you…?

例:Have you tried earplugs?(你試過耳塞嗎?)
例:What if you called them in the morning?(你早上打給他們如何?)
例:Any chance you could move the meeting?(有可能把會議挪開嗎?)
Have you tried…?

If I were you, I’d…

If I were you, I’d message them tonight.(如果是我,我今晚就會傳訊息。)
例:Personally, I’d just ask.(我個人的話會直接問。)
例:I’d probably start with the landlord.(我大概會先從房東開始。)
were 不是打錯字:假設語氣固定用 If I were you,母語者天天這樣講。

4. should 可以用的時候 → What should I do? / You should get an email

例:What should I do?(我該怎麼辦?)
例:Should I bring anything?(我需要帶什麼嗎?)
例:You should get a confirmation email in a few minutes.(你幾分鐘內應該會收到確認信。)

Next time you could…

Next time you could ask about the noise.(下次你可以問一下噪音狀況。)
例:That’s rough. Hopefully the next place is quieter.(真慘。
For what it’s worth, I’d do the same thing.(說真的,我也會這樣做。)
對著別人的過去講,You should have… 幾乎都是責備;講自己則是自嘲:I should have known.(我早該知道的。)另外 You should have seen his face!(你真該看看他當時的表情)是「可惜你沒看到」的驚嘆,不是怪人。

Transcript

M
I’m Mary, and I have to be honest about something a little embarrassing. I used to give people advice in English all the time, and I kept watching their faces change halfway through my sentence, and for years I had no idea why.
J
I’m Jason, and I think I actually know exactly why that kept happening to you. Let me guess, you probably said the word should, more than once, right in a row?
M
Every single time, honestly. In Chinese, the way we naturally say you should is just a light, easy suggestion between friends, nothing heavy about it at all.
J
Right, but in English, that little word should actually carries a lot more weight than people realize. It sounds like you’re telling someone the one correct way to do something, and pointing out that they didn’t do it.
M
So one should on its own is usually totally fine, but two or three of them stacked up in a row start to feel like something completely different.
J
Exactly, and there’s actually a perfect example of that in today’s dialogue, between a guy named Luke and his coworker Grace, on a very tired Monday morning.
M
Okay, tell me exactly what happened between them, because honestly, I think I have been Grace more than once in my own life.
J
Luke’s upstairs neighbor kept him up all night moving furniture again, and Grace jumps right in trying to help. She says, “You should talk to your landlord. You should buy earplugs. You should have checked the building before you signed.”Luke 樓上的鄰居又半夜搬家具吵到他,Grace 想幫忙就一股腦說:「You should talk to your landlord. You should buy earplugs. You should have checked the building before you signed.」(你應該去跟房東講、你應該買耳塞、你當初簽約前就應該先看看那棟樓)。
M
That’s three shoulds back to back, and honestly it starts sounding pretty bossy. No wonder Luke laughs and tells her it sounds like she’s handing him a to-do list.
J
Right, and the worst one in there is definitely the last one, the should have. That one basically means you should have done this back then, and you failed to.
M
So should have plus the past is basically blame dressed up as friendly advice. How do native speakers actually soften all of this instead?
J
Same idea, just softer words. Instead of should, try might want to. So instead of saying, “you should talk to your landlord,” you say, “you might want to talk to your landlord.” Same suggestion, way less pressure. should 換成 might want to(或許可以)。原本的「You should talk to your landlord」就變成「You might want to talk to your landlord」,同樣的建議,壓力小很多。
M
There’s also could always, which makes it sound like just one option among many, not a rule you’re handing down. “You could always message him first and see what he says.” 像是「You could always message him first and see what he says」(你也可以先傳訊息問問看他怎麼說)。
J
My favorite trick is turning it into a question instead of a statement. Instead of saying, “you should buy earplugs,” you just ask, “have you tried earplugs?” 原本的「you should buy earplugs」就換成「have you tried earplugs?」(你試過耳塞嗎?)。
M
That’s smart, because now the other person actually gets to answer you, instead of just standing there being told exactly what to do.
J
There’s also what if you. “What if you called them in the morning instead?” It still suggests something, but it feels like the two of you thinking out loud together.還有 what if you(你… 「What if you called them in the morning instead?」(你早上打給他們如何?)
M
And then there’s my favorite one of all, if I were you, I’d. It puts you in the other person’s shoes instead of pointing a finger straight at them.然後我最喜歡的其實是 if I were you, I’d…(如果是我,我會…)。
J
Like in the dialogue, Grace ends with, “If I were you, I’d message the landlord tonight. And a white noise machine might be worth a shot.” Still helpful, just so much softer.就像對話裡 Grace 最後說的:「If I were you, I’d message the landlord tonight. And a white noise machine might be worth a shot.」(如果是我,我今晚就會傳訊息給房東,白噪音機也可能值得試試看)。
M
Wait, but should isn’t actually a bad word by itself, right? People use it constantly and nobody thinks twice about it.
J
Should is completely fine in questions. “What should I do?” “Should I bring anything?” Nobody on earth hears those two questions as bossy or pushy.should 用在問句裡完全沒問題。「What should I do?」(我該怎麼辦?)、「Should I bring anything?」(我需要帶什麼嗎?)
M
It’s also totally fine when you’re just describing how things normally work. “You should get a confirmation email in a few minutes.” That’s just a fact, not an order from you. 「You should get a confirmation email in a few minutes」(你幾分鐘內應該會收到確認信)就只是在陳述事實,不是在下指令。
J
And should is fine when you’re talking about yourself too. “I should go.” “I should have known.” That’s not advice at all, that’s just you being honest, or a little hard on yourself. 「I should go」(我該走了)、「I should have known」(我早該知道的)。
M
So the actual problem really is just one specific thing, you should, said over and over again, aimed straight at somebody else.
J
Plus you should have, aimed at somebody else’s past mistake. Put those two together and it almost always lands as blame instead of help.再加上 you should have,對著別人的過去講。
M
If something already happened and can’t be changed, don’t say what they should have done differently. Say what they could try the next time instead.
J
“Next time you could ask about the noise before you sign the lease.” Same lesson underneath, but nobody feels attacked hearing it that way.「Next time you could ask about the noise before you sign the lease」(下次簽約前可以先問一下噪音狀況)。
M
Before we go, here’s today’s list: might want to, could always, have you tried, bossy, worth a shot, landlord, earplugs, and to-do list. Now let’s hear Luke and Grace one more time, and count how many shoulds Grace uses before Luke finally stops her.走之前,今天的重點單字複習一下:might want to、could always、have you tried、bossy、worth a shot、landlord(房東)、earplugs(耳塞)、to-do list(待辦清單)。
🔁 [DIALOGUE REPLAY]
J
The second time through, listen closely for exactly where Grace’s shoulds start piling up one after another, and notice how differently Luke’s softer version actually lands on the ear.
M
Have you ever given someone advice in English and watched their face change just a little bit? Tell us in the comments exactly what you said to them that day.
J
Alright, you might want to hit follow before you go.
M
And honestly, it might be worth a shot. This is MJ English.
