主管問到你答不出來,只會說 I don’t know?

答不出來完全沒關係,重點是接三段:Give me a sec.(先爭取幾秒)→ Let me double-check.(我去確認)→ I’ll get back to you by end of day.(給一個回覆時間)。

💡 先搞懂:為什麼 I don’t know 句點會扣分

英文的 I don’t know. (Give me a sec/Let me think for a second/Good question,這三句都是在爭取時間,不是真的在誇對方問得好),再說出下一步(Let me check/Let me double-check/Let me look into it),最後給一個時間點(by end of day/by tomorrow morning/after lunch)。 I will tell you later.

台灣人最容易卡的雷:① I don’t know.(句點)→ I’m not sure off the top of my head, but I can find out.;② Wait a minute.(像在命令)→ Give me a sec.;③ I will tell you later.(沒時間點)→ I’ll get back to you by end of day.

Dialogue

Peter

Tina, quick one. What was our return rate last quarter?

Tina,

Tina

Um. I don’t know. Wait a minute.

Peter

Ha, no rush. I’m not quizzing you, I just need it for the deck.

Tina

Sorry, let me start again. Give me a sec. I’m not sure off the top of my head.

Peter

That’s fine. Ballpark?

Tina

Ballpark, around three percent, but let me double-check before you use it.

Peter

Perfect. When can you get me the exact number?

Tina

I’ll get back to you by end of day. I’ll pull the report after this meeting.

Peter

Great. And if the numbers look off, loop in Kevin from finance.

Tina

Will do. I’ll send you both an email.

答不出來就走三段:先爭取幾秒(Give me a sec)→ 說你要去確認(Let me double-check)→ 給回覆時間(I’ll get back to you by end of day)。 I’m not sure off the top of my head, but I can find out;別單獨丟 I don’t know,也別說 Wait a minute。

①爭取幾秒=Give me a sec.
②一時想不起=off the top of my head
③我去確認=Let me double-check.
④我去研究=Let me look into it.
⑤給時間點=by end of day
⑥先給概數=Ballpark, around three percent.
I don’t know.

Next Time

I don’t know.

I’m not sure off the top of my head, but I can find out.

Wait a minute.

Give me a sec.

為什麼:Wait 是祈使句,對主管、客戶帶命令感;Give me a sec(或 Just a moment, please)才是自然的緩衝。

I will tell you later.

I’ll get back to you by end of day.

為什麼:英文職場承諾要帶時間:by end of day、by tomorrow morning、after lunch;get back to you 比 tell you 更像正式回覆。

Vocabulary Boost

give me a sec/ɡɪv miː ə sek/

給我幾秒(sec = second 的口語縮寫)。

Give me a sec, I’ll check.(給我幾秒,我查一下。)

double-check/ˈdʌbl tʃek/ v.

Let me double-check the number.(讓我再確認一下數字。)

look into/lʊk ˈɪntuː/

I’ll look into it today.(我今天會去查。)

get back to you/ɡet bæk tuː juː/

I’ll get back to you tomorrow.(我明天回覆你。)

follow up/ˈfɑːloʊ ʌp/

I’ll follow up by email.(我會用 email 跟進。)

loop in/luːp ɪn/

Let’s loop in the finance team.(我們把財務團隊拉進來。)

end of day/end ʌv deɪ/

You’ll have it by end of day.(下班前會給你。)

ballpark/ˈbɔːlpɑːrk/ n.

Just give me a ballpark.(給我一個大概就好。)

Sentence Patterns

Give me a sec. / Let me think for a second.

例:Give me a sec.(給我幾秒。)
例:Let me think for a second.(讓我想一下。)
例:Good question. Let me pull it up.(好問題,我調出來看看。)
Good question

Let me double-check / look into it

Let me double-check and confirm.(我再確認一下。)
例:Let me look into it this afternoon.(我今天下午去查。)
例:Let me pull the report and come back to you.(我拉一下報表再回覆你。)

3. 給回覆時間 → I’ll get back to you by + 時間

I’ll get back to you by end of day.(我下班前回覆你。)
例:Can I get back to you on that tomorrow?(這件事我明天回覆你可以嗎?)
例:I’ll follow up after lunch.(午餐後我再跟你回報。)
Can I get back to you on that?

I’m not sure off the top of my head, but…

I’m not sure off the top of my head, but I can find out.(我一時想不起來,但我可以查到。)
例:That’s not really my area, but I can loop in someone who knows.(那不是我負責的,但我可以找懂的人進來。)
例:I don’t have that in front of me right now.(我現在手邊沒有那個資料。)
off the top of my head =「沒查資料、憑印象」,是很好用的免責小句。

Somewhere around fifty, but don’t quote me on that.(大概五十上下,但別引用我這句。)
例:Roughly a week, give or take.(大概一週,前後差幾天。)
don’t quote me on that =「這只是我隨口說的,別當定論」,職場超常聽到。

Transcript

J
I’m Jason, and here’s a scene a lot of you probably know. You’re walking down the hallway, coffee in hand, minding your own business, heading nowhere in particular.
M
I’m Mary, and then your manager walks right up and asks you one simple question, and just like that, your brain goes completely, totally blank, like someone hit the off switch.
J
Maybe it’s a number, maybe it’s a status update, and all you can get out is “I don’t know.” Then your manager just nods and walks off, like it’s totally normal.
M
And here’s the thing, you feel like you just brushed the question away, even though that’s not what you meant to do, and it bugs you the rest of the day.
J
Here’s the good news, “I don’t know” isn’t the problem. The problem is stopping right there, right after the period, that little dot at the end.
M
Native speakers almost never just drop “I don’t know” and stop. They always add something after it, usually a clear next step, so the other person knows something is happening.
J
So today, a three-part move. Part one, buy yourself a few seconds. Say something like “Give me a sec” or “Let me think for a second,” anything that fills the silence. 說 Give me a sec(給我幾秒)或 Let me think for a second(讓我想一下),先把沉默填起來。
M
You can also say “Good question, let me pull it up.” That’s not real praise, by the way, it’s just a reflex to buy some time. Good question, let me pull it up(好問題,我調出來看看)。
J
Part two, say your next action. Something like “Let me check” or “Let me double-check and confirm,” so your manager knows you’re actually handling it, not just standing there. 像是 Let me check(我查一下)或
M
Or “Let me look into it this afternoon,” or “Let me pull the report and come back to you.” Any of those move things forward and keep your manager in the loop. Let me look into it this afternoon(我今天下午去查)、Let me pull the report and come back to you(我拉一下報表再回覆你)。
J
Part three, give a time. Don’t leave it open, say “I’ll get back to you by end of day” or “Can I get back to you tomorrow?” I’ll get back to you by end of day(我今天下班前回覆你)或 Can I get back to you tomorrow(我明天回覆你可以嗎)。
M
That’s the whole formula, buy a few seconds, name your next step, give a time. Three short pieces, and you sound completely in control, no matter what your manager throws at you.
J
But what if you genuinely don’t know, and there’s nothing left to check? Try “I’m not sure off the top of my head, but I can find out.” I’m not sure off the top of my head, but I can find out(我一時想不起來,但我可以查到)。
M
Off the top of my head just means you’re going from memory, not looking anything up, and it’s a really handy little phrase, especially when your mind goes blank.Off the top of my head(憑印象)的意思就是你是靠記憶講的,沒有查資料,這句超好用,尤其是腦袋突然一片空白的時候。
J
Or say “That’s not really my area, but I can loop in someone who knows.” Loop in means bringing someone else into the conversation to help. That’s not really my area, but I can loop in someone who knows(那不是我負責的,但我可以找懂的人進來)。
M
Sometimes your manager just wants a rough number, not the exact one, and that’s exactly where the word ballpark comes in really handy, more than the exact figure ever could.
J
Ballpark means a rough guess, not the precise figure. You could say “Ballpark, around three percent” or “Somewhere around fifty, but don’t quote me on that.”ballpark Somewhere around fifty, but don’t quote me on that(大概五十上下,但別引用我這句)。
M
Don’t quote me on that is such a useful line, it basically means, this is just a guess, please don’t treat it as the official number, especially in front of other people.don’t quote me on that(別引用我這句)是很好用的一句話,基本上就是在說,這只是我隨口猜的,不要把它當成正式數字,尤其是在別人面前更是這樣。
J
Now, three traps that sound like normal English but actually land pretty badly in front of your manager, so let’s go through them fast, one by one.
M
First, the bare “I don’t know.” with a period at the end. The words are fine, the period is the real problem here, not the meaning behind them.第一個,單獨丟一句「I don’t know.」
J
It sounds final, like you’re done thinking about it, and you’re already moving on to something else, leaving your manager with nothing at all to go on.
M
Second trap, “Wait a minute.” That sounds like you’re ordering your manager to wait, which feels a little rude coming from someone below them at work.
J
Swap it for “Give me a sec.” Same meaning, but way more polite, especially when you’re talking to your boss, a client, or anyone senior to you at the office.
M
Third trap, “I will tell you later.” Grammatically it’s fine, but there’s no time attached, so the other person is just left hanging, not knowing when you’ll follow up.第三個雷,「I will tell you later.」(我之後會跟你說)。
J
Fix that with “I’ll get back to you by end of day,” or just EOD for short in emails. Notice the difference, one has a deadline, the other is just a vague promise.改成 I’ll get back to you by end of day(我下班前回覆你)就對了,email 裡常縮寫成 EOD。
M
Quick recap before we wrap up, give me a sec, double-check, look into, get back to you, follow up, loop in, end of day, and ballpark, eight little phrases that do a lot of work.快速複習一下,give me a sec、double-check、look into、get back to you、follow up、loop in、end of day、還有 ballpark,八個小片語,用途都很大。
J
Alright, we’re just about done here for today. Let’s hear Peter and Tina one more time, and listen for how Tina turns it around in one single sentence.
🔁 [DIALOGUE REPLAY]
J
So the second time through, listen closely, Tina never leaves a silence, she always turns it into a plan with an actual time attached, instead of leaving things hanging.
M
Tell us in the comments, what do you say when your manager catches you with a question you cannot answer? We really want to hear it, so don’t be shy.
