JOkay, confession time. I’m Jason, and back when I worked in an office, I used to say “I go first” every night when I left. My coworkers just smiled. One guy finally asked me, “First to do what?” I had no idea what he meant.
MHa! I’m Mary, and I’ve totally done that too. In Chinese, saying “I go first” feels so natural, so we just carry it over into English. Today’s story is about a woman who does the exact same thing. Her name’s Amy.
JSo here’s the scene. It’s six o’clock at the office. Amy packs her bag and says to her coworker Mark, “It’s six o’clock! Okay, Mark, I go first!” She sounds super proud, like she just nailed her English for the day. It’s six o’clock! Okay, Mark, I go first!”
MAnd Mark laughs a little. He says, “Ha, first? You mean you’re heading out?” Amy asks if “I go first” sounds strange, and Mark says, “A little. It sounds like you’re first in line.” Then he gives her the fix, “Just say, I’m heading out.”Mark Ha, first? You mean you’re heading out?” Amy 問 “I go first” 是不是很怪,Mark 說:”A little. It sounds like you’re first in line.” Just say, I’m heading out.”
JHere’s why. “Go first” is about order. You go first in a race, or first in a game, or first in line. But Amy isn’t racing anybody. She just wants to say she’s leaving. So English speakers use “head out,” which simply means leave.
MSo the line is “I’m heading out.” You can also say “I’m gonna head out,” which is relaxed. “Gonna” is just “going to” said fast. And a softer one is “I’ll get going.” It means, okay, it’s getting late.所以句子是 “I’m heading out.”,也可以說 “I’m gonna head out”,更輕鬆。gonna 就是 going to 講快。
JNow the other wrong one. Some people say “I go home now.” It’s not impossible, but it sounds stiff, like a robot reading a schedule. “I’ll get going” or “I’m heading home” sounds like a real person with a bag on their shoulder. I’ll get going” 或 “I’m heading home” 才像背著包包要走的真人。
MBack to the story. Amy says, “Oh no, wait. Our manager just sent another email.” So now she’s stuck at the door. Should she stay and read it? Should she run? Honestly, that feeling is so real. Everybody has had that moment at six o’clock. Oh no, wait. Our manager just sent another email.”
JMark asks, “Is it urgent? If not, it can wait till tomorrow.” Urgent means it has to be done right now. So Mark is saying, is this an emergency? If not, don’t fix it tonight.Mark 問:”Is it urgent? If not, it can wait till tomorrow.” urgent
MAmy checks and says, “It says, no rush. Okay, it can wait till tomorrow.” “No rush” is a great little phrase. A boss can say it to a team, or you can say it to a friend. It means take your time, nothing’s on fire. It says, no rush. Okay, it can wait till tomorrow.”
JThen Mark says, “Perfect. You worked hard today. Let’s call it a day.” It’s an idiom, so don’t translate it word by word. It means you decide to stop working for today.接著 Mark 說:”Perfect. You worked hard today. Let’s call it a day.”
MIt’s a “we” phrase, so you usually say it to people working with you. “Let’s call it a day.” Or “Should we call it a day?” If it’s really late, some people say “Let’s call it a night.” Same idea, just with more tired energy. Let’s call it a day.”,或 “Should we call it a day?”
JAmy answers, “Yes, I’m done for the day. I’m heading out. See you tomorrow!” Notice “I’m done for the day” is different from “Let’s call it a day.” This one is just about you. Your own tasks are finished.Amy 回答:”Yes, I’m done for the day. I’m heading out. See you tomorrow!” 注意 “I’m done for the day” 跟 “Let’s call it a day” 不一樣,這句只講你自己:你自己的事做完了。
MRight, so “call it a day” is a group decision, and “done for the day” is your own status. Like, “I’m done for the day, but Mark’s still working.”沒錯,call it a day 是大家一起決定,done for the day 是你自己的狀態。 I’m done for the day, but Mark’s still working.”
JFinally, Mark says, “See you tomorrow, Amy. Have a good night!” Warm ending. “See you tomorrow” fits when you really will see them. In the evening, “Have a good night” fits better than “Have a good day.”最後 Mark 說:”See you tomorrow, Amy. Have a good night!” 明天真的會見面,才說 See you tomorrow。到了晚上,說 Have a good night 會比 Have a good day 自然。
MOne more common mistake. To say what time work ends, you might say “I go off work at six.” But “go off” is for things like an alarm. “My alarm went off at six.” Your coworker might picture your alarm clock! 要說幾點下班,你可能會說 “I go off work at six.”,但 go off 是用在鬧鐘這類東西,像 “My alarm went off at six.”。
JYeah, and a bomb can go off too! The right phrase is “get off work.” So you say, “I get off work at six.” Think of getting off a bus. Work is the bus, and at six you step off of it.對,炸彈也會 go off!正確說法是 get off work。所以你說 “I get off work at six.”。
MI love that picture. It works in the past too. “I just got off work” means I finished a few minutes ago. And “What time do you get off work?” is normal small talk. I just got off work” 就是我幾分鐘前剛下班。問 “What time do you get off work?”
JTime for a tiny self-check. One: you’re leaving the office alone and want to say you’re going. Two: you want to tell a friend your work ends at six. Three: it’s super late, and your whole tired team is still there. What would you say?
MPause for a second if you need it. Okay, answers. One, “I’m heading out.” Two, “I get off work at six.” Three, “Let’s call it a day.” Got all three? Nice. If not, that’s normal. 一,”I’m heading out.”。二,”I get off work at six.”。三,”Let’s call it a day.”。
JOkay, let’s hear the whole conversation one more time, start to finish. The six o’clock goodbye, the surprise email, all of it. It’s short, so you can catch every phrase we just talked about without any stress.
MHere it comes again, nice and clear. This time, try saying Amy’s lines out loud along with the audio, like you’re packing up your own bag at six o’clock. Ready? Here we go.
🔁 [DIALOGUE REPLAY]
JThe second time through, listen for how light Mark’s goodbye sounds. No big speech, just a few easy words, and the day is over. Try to catch “heading out,” “done for the day,” and “Have a good night.” 試著抓到 heading out、done for the day 跟 Have a good night。
