JYour heart’s beating a little fast. You have something to say, and you’re waiting for a gap. But the boss keeps talking. Ten seconds. Thirty seconds. No gap. Hi, I’m Jason, and this one’s for you.
MAnd I’m Mary. Our story is a one-on-one video call on Monday morning. Vivian, a Taiwanese woman, is talking with her foreign manager, Ryan, about launching a new app. Ryan talks for a few minutes, and Vivian can’t find a gap.
JRyan finally says, “So we launch the new app next Friday, and the ads go live the same day. Sound good?” Vivian knows Friday is too soon. So she says, “Um, sorry, sorry, I want to say one thing.”Ryan
MLet’s look at that line. First, two sorries. One is polite. Two or three can sound nervous. Second, “I want to say” isn’t wrong. It just sounds like an announcement. And Ryan answers, “Sure, go ahead.”
JSo what’s a better opener? Ryan gives it to her: “Can I jump in here?” Jump in means join the conversation. It’s short, friendly, and it’s a question, so the other person usually pauses and lets you speak. Ryan 教了她:「Can I jump in here?」Jump in 就是加入對話。
MAnother one is “Sorry to cut in, but…” Cut in means interrupt. Notice, one sorry, then straight to your point. “Sorry to cut in, but the designs won’t be ready until Wednesday.” Clean and calm.另一句是「Sorry to cut in, but…」。
JYou can also keep it very simple: “Can I add something?” I like this one when you’re talking to a boss. You’re asking first, so it feels respectful, not pushy.你也可以更簡單:「Can I add something?」
MNow, what about “Wait!”? With a boss, that sounds too sharp, like hitting the brakes. And “Hold on a sec” is fine, but only with close coworkers. With your manager, stay with the questions. 「Hold on a sec」可以用,但只限跟很熟的同事。
JHere’s Vivian’s real problem, and she says it out loud: “I always wait for a pause, and it never comes.” Ryan says, “That’s normal. In meetings here, people cut in all the time.”
MTo be fair, it depends on the company and the team. Some meetings are more formal. But in many English-speaking workplaces, a short, polite interruption is normal. Waiting for total silence can mean you never speak at all.
JNow, say someone makes a point and you want to build on it. Ryan teaches Vivian: “Just to add to that…” And she tries it: “Just to add to that, the ads need two days for review too.” Vivian:「Just to add to that…」
MThat sounds like teamwork, not disagreement. A more formal version is “Building on what you said…” Use it with clients or in bigger meetings. “Building on what you said, we could test the app first.” 比較正式的說法是「Building on what you said…」,跟客戶或比較大的會議可以用。
JA tiny moment from my life: I once sat through a whole meeting with my question ready, and the topic changed before I spoke. I felt silly all day. Waiting too long has a cost.
MMine is the video call version. You both start talking at the same time, then you both stop, then you both start again. So awkward! Video lag makes it worse. Here’s the fix.
JSay, “Sorry, go ahead.” The other person might say, “No, you go first.” Then you go. And if you both stop and it goes quiet, you can ask, “You were saying?” It keeps things moving.你可以說:「Sorry, go ahead.」對方可能會說:「No, you go first.」
MWhat if you’re the one being interrupted? Stay calm. Say, “Can I just finish this thought?” The word just makes it softer. You can also say, “One second, I’m almost done.” 可以說:「Can I just finish this thought?」 也可以說:「One second, I’m almost done.」
JNow the trick for when you never find a pause: “Before we move on…” Every topic change is a door opening. “Before we move on, can I ask about the budget?”如果你怎麼都等不到空檔,有個小撇步:「Before we move on…」
MThat’s smart, because you don’t have to interrupt anyone. You just use the topic change. Think of a train station: the train stops, and that’s when you get on.
JBack to our story. After Vivian adds her point, Ryan says, “Then let’s move the launch to the Monday after. Thanks for speaking up.” Speak up means say your opinion out loud.
MThat line is useful for you too. If a coworker shares an idea, you can say, “Thanks for speaking up.” It’s a nice way to help people feel safe sharing. 如果同事提出想法,你可以說:「Thanks for speaking up.」
JQuick recap. To enter: “Can I jump in here?” or “Sorry to cut in, but…” And only one sorry. To add: “Just to add to that…” or “Building on what you said…” 想插話:「Can I jump in here?」或「Sorry to cut in, but…」,而且 sorry 只說一次。想補充:「Just to add to that…」或「Building on what you said…」。
MTwo people start at once: “Sorry, go ahead.” Interrupted: “Can I just finish this thought?” No gap: “Before we move on…” And with your boss, skip “Wait!” and save “Hold on a sec” for close coworkers. 被打斷:「Can I just finish this thought?」一直沒空檔:「Before we move on…」跟主管說話,別用「Wait!」,「Hold on a sec」留給很熟的同事。
JOne more thing: you don’t need perfect English to jump in. A short question is enough. Vivian’s first try wasn’t a disaster. It just needed two small changes: fewer sorries, and a softer opener.
MGood point. It’s a skill, and skills grow with practice. Try just one phrase in your next meeting. Start with “Can I add something?” It’s the easiest one. 從「Can I add something?」
JOkay, we’re almost done. Let’s hear the whole conversation one more time.
MThis time, listen for how Vivian cuts in, and for Ryan’s friendly tips. Here it comes.
🔁 [DIALOGUE REPLAY]
JOne sorry, one good opener, and you’re in. Waiting for total silence usually means waiting forever.
