M: Oh, for sure.

J: Especially when you have to have those first really important conversations with your new manager.

M: And in English, no less. You really want to nail it.

J: It’s true. I mean, clear communication on day one isn’t just about getting the tasks right, it’s about setting a professional tone from the very start.

M: Okay, so today we’re looking at a scene. We have Liam, it’s his first day, and he’s meeting his new manager, Ms. Chen.

J: And she’s about to assign his first critical duty. So let’s pay attention to the specific words they use.

M: All right, let’s just listen to the exchange.

J: Okay, so a great little scene there.

M: Yeah, let’s unpack this a bit. I love how direct Liam is, but, you know, not in an aggressive way.

J: He asks that brilliant question, “What am I expected to do?”
J:他問了一個非常厲害的問題:「What am I expected to do?(我被期待要做什麼?)」

M: Right. And that passive structure is so key.

J: Why is that? What does it do for him?

M: Well, by saying “am I expected to do,” he avoids something more informal, like, “Uh, what do you want me to do?”
M:因為說「am I expected to do」能避免比較不正式的說法,比如「呃,你想要我做什麼?」。

J: Ah, I see.

M: It’s just professionally safer. It’s asking about the established expectation for the role, not just the manager’s personal, you know, whim right now. It shows he’s ready to meet the standard.

J: That’s a huge takeaway right there. And Ms. Chen’s response is also very clear.

M: Exactly. Notice her phrasing, “You will start with…”
M:沒錯。注意她的說法:「You will start with…(你會從…

J: It’s not a suggestion.

M: Not at all. That use of the future tense, “you will,” is a clean, polite command. It just removes all ambiguity. And this is really typical when you’re giving a newcomer what we call “routine tasks.”

J: Right, the basics. So when she says “basic duties,” she means things like, what? Answering calls, data entry?

M: Exactly. Foundational work, stuff everyone needs to do at the start. Then she gives him his main assignment, learning about the “featured products.”

J: Which are just the company’s main prioritized items.

M: Yep. And she also tells him to “sort the papers,” which simply means to, you know, organize or classify them before filing.

J: Okay. Now for what I think is the most interesting part. Liam’s last line.

J: “I’ll work on it at once.” That feels like such a power move for commitment.
J:「I’ll work on it at once(我會立刻開始做)」聽起來非常有承諾度,像一個強而有力的宣示。

M: It definitely is. It signals immediate follow-through. It basically tells the manager, “I’m on this the second I leave your office.”

J: But this raises a good question. Is “at once” maybe too much pressure sometimes?

M: Oh, that’s a great point. It can be. I mean, if the task is huge, like a massive report, saying “at once” might sound like you’re over-promising.

J: Right. You could be setting yourself up to fail.

M: Precisely. So if you feel “at once” is a bit too strong, you could use some safer alternatives.

J: Like what?
J:例如?

M: Something like, “I’ll prioritize that right away,” or even just a confident, “Consider it handled.”
M:例如「I’ll prioritize that right away(我會優先處理)」或更自信的「Consider it handled(交給我就對了)」。

J: I like that. It still shows you’re enthusiastic, but manages expectations a little better.

M: Exactly. It’s all about finding that balance. You want to show you’re committed, whether you’re handling a huge project or just some routine tasks.

J: This is all so useful. Practicing these specific phrases can really boost your confidence on that first day.

M: It really can.
M:真的會。
