2026 08 27 en seeing a dentist Daily English |

其實看牙幾句就搞定——聽懂 open wide(張大嘴)、does it hurt here?,被說有 cavity(蛀牙)就冷靜問 “Do I need a filling?”

在美國看牙最卡的不是英文難,是牙醫的指令跟術語沒聽過——open wide(張大嘴)、bite down(咬合)、cavity(蛀牙)、filling(補牙)、numb(打麻醉)。

台灣人最容易卡的雷:常見兩個地雷——① 描述牙齒不舒服別只說 my tooth is broken,說 this tooth is sensitiveit hurts when I drink something cold 更準;② 聽到 cavity 別慌,直接問 “Is it serious? Do I need a filling?”

Dr. Lee

Hi Emma, go ahead and have a seat. Let’s take a look — open wide for me.

Emma

Sure. Um, one tooth’s been a little sensitive lately.

Dr. Lee

Okay. Does it hurt when I press here, or when you drink something cold?

Emma

Cold drinks, mostly. It’s a quick, sharp feeling.

Dr. Lee

Got it. Bite down for me… Ah, I see a small cavity on the side here.

Emma

Oh no. Is it serious? Do I need a filling?

Dr. Lee

It’s tiny, nothing to worry about. A quick filling will fix it. We’ll numb it first, so you won’t feel a thing.

Emma

That’s a relief. How long does it take?

Dr. Lee

About twenty minutes. Let’s finish your cleaning today and book the filling for next week.

Emma

Sounds good. And I’ll try to floss more, I promise.

美國看牙三段——描述問題(sensitive/hurts when…)+聽懂指令(open wide/bite down)+接住診斷(cavity → Do I need a filling?)。

①預約=make an appointment
②洗牙=a cleaning|檢查=a checkup
③張大嘴=open wide
④咬合=bite down
⑤蛀牙=a cavity
⑥補牙=a filling
⑦打麻醉=numb it
⑧牙齒敏感=a sensitive tooth

Next Time

My tooth is broken.

This tooth is sensitive. / It hurts when I drink cold water.

痠痛敏感用 sensitive/hurts when…

Will you give me anesthesia?

Will you numb it first?

I want to wash my teeth.

I’m here for a cleaning.

為什麼:洗牙的英文是 (a) cleaning,不是 wash my teeth(那聽起來像自己刷牙,不是專業洗牙服務)。

Vocabulary Boost

make an appointment/meɪk ən əˈpɔɪntmənt/

I’d like to make an appointment.(我想預約。)

checkup/ˈtʃɛkʌp/ n.

cleaning/ˈkliːnɪŋ/ n.

Let’s finish your cleaning today.(我們今天把洗牙做完。)

cavity/ˈkævəti/ n.

filling/ˈfɪlɪŋ/ n.

numb/nʌm/ v./adj.

We’ll numb it first.(我們會先打麻醉。)

sensitive/ˈsɛnsətɪv/ adj.

This tooth is sensitive.(這顆牙很敏感。)

floss/flɔːs/ v./n.

You should floss every day.(你應該每天用牙線。)

Sentence Patterns

1. 預約看牙 → make an appointment / I’m here for…

打電話預約用 make an appointment;到診所報到說 I’m here for…。

例:I’d like to make an appointment with the dentist.(我想跟牙醫預約。)
例:I’m here for a cleaning.(我來洗牙。)
例:Do you have anything this week?(這週有空位嗎?)
預約用 make an appointment;報到說 I’m here for…。

This tooth is sensitive / It hurts when…

This tooth is really sensitive.(這顆牙很敏感。)
例:It hurts when I drink cold water.(喝冰水會痛。)
例:There’s a sharp pain right here.(這裡有一陣刺痛。)

Open wide / Bite down / Does this hurt?

例:Open wide for me.(嘴巴張大。)
例:Does this hurt?(這樣會痛嗎?)

Is it serious? / Do I need a filling?

Is it serious/Do I need…

例:Is it serious?(嚴重嗎?)
例:Do I need a filling?(我需要補牙嗎?)
例:How long does it take?(要多久?)

Do you take my insurance? / How much…?

Do you take my insurance?(你們收我的保險嗎?)
例:How much is it out of pocket?(自付要多少?)
例:Is the cleaning covered?(洗牙有給付嗎?)

Transcript

J
Picture this: you’re leaned back in that big vinyl chair, a bright light shining right down at you, and the dentist walks over snapping on a pair of gloves. Before you can even say hi, you hear those four words — open wide for me.
M
That moment right there is exactly why so many people dread going to the dentist in the US — not the drill, but not understanding what the dentist is actually asking you to do or telling you about your teeth.
J
I’m Jason, and today we’re sitting in on a really normal dentist visit, the kind almost everyone here in the US goes through — a routine checkup and cleaning that turns into a small surprise.
M
And I’m Mary. Our patient today is Emma. She just booked a routine checkup and cleaning, but her dentist, Dr. Lee, ends up finding something Emma wasn’t expecting to hear about.
J
Right before that, Emma actually describes a symptom, and this is a phrase worth stealing: she says, ‘One tooth’s been a little sensitive lately.’ Not broken, not painful — just sensitive.
M
That word ‘sensitive’ is huge at the dentist. Dr. Lee follows up naturally too, asking, ‘Does it hurt when I press here, or when you drink something cold?’ Two totally different kinds of pain.「敏感」這個字在牙醫診所超常用。Dr.
J
And Emma nails her answer: ‘Cold drinks, mostly. It’s a quick, sharp feeling.’ That’s such a useful pattern — cold drinks, mostly, plus describing exactly how the pain feels, quick and sharp.
M
Now here come the instructions dentists give constantly, and honestly, half the anxiety is just not knowing what they mean. First one: ‘open wide.’ Simple, but it’s literally the first thing you’ll hear.
J
Second one is ‘bite down.’ The dentist wants you to close your teeth together so they can check your bite. You’ll hear that phrase in almost every single dental visit.
M
And then comes the moment Emma’s been bracing for. Dr. Lee looks and says, ‘I see a small cavity on the side here.’ That word, cavity, just means a small hole from tooth decay.
J
Emma’s reaction is exactly what you want to copy, by the way — calm, not panicked. She asks, ‘Oh no, is it serious? Do I need a filling?’ Two clean, direct questions.
M
A filling is just what it sounds like — the dentist fills that small hole so it doesn’t get bigger. And Dr. Lee reassures her right away: ‘It’s tiny, nothing to worry about.’
J
Here’s a word that trips people up: ‘numb.’ Dr. Lee says, ‘We’ll numb it first, so you won’t feel a thing.’ That means they’ll use a local anesthetic before the filling.
M
Emma asks something totally practical next — ‘How long does it take?’ Dr. Lee says about twenty minutes. That question alone is worth memorizing for literally any doctor’s appointment.
J
One more useful phrase before we listen — a ‘cleaning.’ Today’s visit was mainly a cleaning, the regular polish and checkup, and the cavity was just something they found along the way.
M
And don’t forget insurance. A simple line like ‘Do you take my insurance?’ can save you an awkward, expensive surprise at the front desk before any treatment even starts.
J
Okay, let’s actually hear that whole conversation play out between Emma and Dr. Lee, so you can hear all these phrases used naturally, back to back.
🔁 [DIALOGUE REPLAY]
M
Hearing it again, what stands out to me is how calm Emma stays the whole time. She never panics, she just asks clear questions one at a time.
J
Right, so let’s do a fast recap of the toolkit. To describe a symptom: ‘This tooth is sensitive,’ or ‘it hurts when I drink something cold.’ Simple, specific, easy to say.
M
For instructions, listen for ‘open wide’ and ‘bite down’ — those are just directions, not anything scary. And if you’re unsure, you can always ask, ‘Does this hurt?’
J
For the diagnosis part, know your three words: a cavity, a filling, and numb. If you hear ‘cavity,’ don’t freak out — just ask your two go-to questions.
M
Those questions again: ‘Is it serious?’ and ‘Do I need a filling?’ They sound simple, but they’re exactly what a native speaker would actually say in that chair.
J
And if the dentist is scheduling a next step, ‘How long does it take?’ is your best friend. It works for fillings, cleanings, basically any procedure they mention.
M
Don’t skip the insurance line either — ‘Do you take my insurance?’ Ask it at check-in, before anyone touches your teeth, and you’ll avoid a lot of confusion later.
J
In the US, dental costs can vary a lot, so that one question isn’t just polite, it’s genuinely money-saving.
M
Honestly, the dentist’s office is one of those places where just knowing five or six phrases changes the whole experience from stressful to totally manageable.
J
So next time you’re leaned back under that bright light, you’ll actually understand what’s happening instead of just nodding along and hoping for the best.
M
And that’s the real goal here — not sounding perfect, just understanding enough to ask the right questions and feel a little less nervous in that chair.
J
Alright, that’s our trip to the dentist with Emma today. Small cavity, big vocabulary win — hope a few of these phrases stick with you.
M
Same here. Try using just one of these phrases next time you’re at any kind of appointment, and see how much smoother it feels.
J
Take care of those teeth, and we’ll catch you in the next episode.
