❌ 中文腦會說

為什麼：中文「加油」同時可以指加汽油、加機油，但英文的 oil 專指機油，講錯會讓對方以為你車子引擎出問題。

✅ 該這樣說

為什麼：decline 是櫃檯情境的專業說法，聽起來乾脆又有禮貌，比直接說 don’t want 順耳很多。

為什麼：一句 Do I need to…? 就能把油量規則問清楚，省去比手畫腳、猜半天的窘境。

面對加購推銷，用這句一次表態，decline 比直接說 no 聽起來更禮貌、更專業。

例：I’ll take the extra driver option.（我要加購額外駕駛。）

decline 後面不用加一堆解釋，直接表態最乾脆，也最不會被繼續推銷。

4. Do I need to…? → 我需要…嗎？（確認規則句型）

不確定規則時直接問，比自己亂猜安全，尤其油量、還車地點這種容易踩雷的地方。

例：Do I need to return it full?（我需要加滿油還車嗎？）
例：Do I need to bring my passport?（我需要帶護照嗎？）
例：Do I need to sign anything else?（我還需要簽別的東西嗎？）

多問一句，勝過還車時被多收一筆意外的費用。

家人朋友輪流開車最實用的一句，沒加就上路，保險出狀況時很可能不會理賠。

I’m Mary, and that exact moment, standing at a counter where every rule feels different, is what we’re breaking down today, from pickup all the way to the gas pump.我是 Mary，這種站在櫃檯前、每條規則都不一樣的瞬間，就是我們今天要拆解的——從取車一路講到加油站。

I’m Jason, and today’s episode follows Nina, who’s picking up a car at the airport, and Brian, the rental agent walking her through the whole reservation from start to finish.我是 Jason，這集要跟著 Nina，她在機場要取車，還有 Brian，帶著她把整個訂位（reservation）流程從頭走一遍。

Wait — so “coverage” and “insurance” basically mean the same thing at the counter?等等——所以 coverage 跟 insurance 在櫃檯講起來其實是同一件事？

Pretty much. Saying yes means paying extra per day so the rental company covers any damage. Saying no means you’re relying on protection you already have somewhere else.差不多。說要，就是每天多付一筆錢，讓租車公司幫你出車損的錢；說不要，就是靠你自己原本就有的保障。

So Nina asks, “What happens if I decline the insurance?” And Brian tells her straight — “You’d pay the deductible yourself if anything happens.”於是 Nina 問：「如果我不加保險會怎樣？」Brian 老實回答：「那出事的話，自付額（deductible）就要你自己出。」

That line — “I’ll decline, thanks” — is exactly how you say no to an upsell politely, without sounding rude or unsure of yourself.「I’ll decline, thanks」這句，就是禮貌拒絕加購（decline）的標準說法，不會顯得沒禮貌或猶豫不決。

Good phrase to keep in your back pocket, honestly. It works for insurance, extra snacks, upgraded seats — basically any counter offer you don’t need.這句真的很好用，講真的。不管是保險、機上點心，還是升等座位，遇到櫃檯推銷都可以直接搬出來用。

Brian mentions one more perk along the way: “This one has unlimited mileage.” Meaning no extra charge no matter how far Nina drives during the trip.Brian 順口提了另一個福利：「這台不限里程喔。」意思是不管 Nina 這趟開多遠，都不會多收錢。

That one actually matters a lot for road trips. Some rentals quietly charge per mile once you cross a set limit, and it adds up fast.這對長途自駕真的很重要。有些租車一超過里程上限就默默開始按英里收錢，累積起來很可觀。

One more logistics detail — Nina asks what time she needs to be back for drop off. Brian explains that most counters expect the car returned by the same pick up time, or they charge for an extra day.還有一個實際細節——Nina 問幾點前要還車（drop off）。Brian 說大部分櫃檯都希望你在取車（pick up）的同一個時間前還回來，不然會多算一天的錢。

Now for the part almost every Taiwanese traveler gets wrong — the fuel policy, and specifically the phrase “full-to-full.”接下來是幾乎每個台灣旅客都會搞錯的地方——油量政策，尤其是「full-to-full」這個講法。

Nina asks, “Do I need to return it full?” and Brian confirms it — “Exactly, it’s full-to-full. Just fill it up before you drop it off.”Nina 問：「還車時要加滿嗎？」Brian 確認：「對，就是加滿還（full-to-full），還車前先加滿油就好。」

“Full-to-full” means you pick up the car with a full tank, and you’re expected to return it full too, or they’ll charge you a steep fee to refill it themselves.「full-to-full」的意思是，你拿到車的時候油是滿的，還車時也要還滿的，不然他們會用很貴的價錢幫你加滿。

Here’s the trap that catches almost everyone learning English in Taiwan — in Mandarin, one single verb covers both “pump gas” and “add oil,” so people naturally translate it literally.這裡藏著一個幾乎每個學英文的台灣人都會踩到的雷——中文裡「加油」這個動詞，同時可以指加汽油，也可以指加機油，所以大家很自然就會逐字翻譯。

But to an American ear, “oil” means motor oil — like an engine problem, a mechanic thing. The word you actually want at the pump is “gas.”但對美國人來說，「oil」聽起來是指機油——像是引擎出問題、要找技師的那種事。在加油站真正該用的字是「gas」。

So instead of “I want to add oil,” just say, “I need to fill it up,” or “I’m going to get some gas.” Simple, and it actually makes sense to a local.所以別說「I want to add oil」，直接說「I need to fill it up」，或是「I’m going to get some gas」就好，簡單又道地。

At the pump, Nina also has to pick a fuel grade — “regular” or “premium.” “Regular” just means standard unleaded gas, and Americans almost never say the octane number out loud, unlike the 92 and 95 you’d hear back home.到了加油站，Nina 還要選油品等級——「regular」還是「premium」。regular 就是一般的無鉛汽油（unleaded），而且美國人幾乎不會講辛烷值數字，不像台灣習慣講92、95。

And most stations are self-serve here — you pump the gas yourself, and a lot of them make you prepay inside the store first, before the pump even turns on.而且這裡的加油站大多是自助（self-serve）的——要自己動手加油，很多還要先進店裡預付（prepay），油槍才會動。

It’s a real culture shift the first time. In Taiwan, an attendant usually pumps the gas for you and even checks your tires. In the U.S., you’re almost always doing every step yourself.第一次真的會有點文化衝擊。在台灣，通常是工讀生幫你加油，甚至順便幫你檢查胎壓；在美國，幾乎每個步驟都要自己來。
