J: Picture this. You’re on vacation, you find what looks like the perfect sweater, you buy it — and back at the hotel, you try it on properly and it just doesn’t fit. Now you have to march back to the store and return it, in English, to a stranger behind a counter. For a lot of us, that’s the exact moment we decide it’s not worth the hassle — we just eat the loss and keep a sweater we’ll literally never wear. It doesn’t have to be that way. I’m Jason, this is MJ English, and today we’re fixing this one for good: every word you need to return something, exchange it, or get your money back, without breaking a sweat or losing the cash.

M: I’m Mary. And here’s the reassuring part: returning something is honestly one of the most scripted, predictable conversations in the entire English language. The clerk asks the same three or four questions every single time, in roughly the same order — so once you’ve heard it once, you can handle it forever. In our dialogue, Rachel walks up to the counter and opens with the gold-standard line: “I’d like to return this sweater. It doesn’t really fit.” That right there is the whole template — “I’d like to return this,” followed by a quick, simple reason. Notice she does NOT say “I want to return this,” which can come off a little blunt or demanding. “I’d like to” is softer, more polite, and it’s exactly what a native speaker reaches for here.
M: 我是 Mary。讓人安心的是：退貨其實是整個英文裡最有腳本、最好預測的對話之一。店員每次都問那同樣三、四個問題、順序也差不多——所以你只要聽懂一次，就一輩子都能應付。對話裡，Rachel 走到櫃台，開口就是黃金句：”I’d like to return this sweater. J: The clerk’s very first question is the one people forget to prepare for: “Do you have the receipt?” The receipt is your proof of purchase, and for most regular returns, you genuinely need it — so dig it out of your bag before you go. Rachel’s totally ready: she mentions the tags are still on. Keeping the tags on is the unwritten rule of returns — if you’ve cut the tag off, a lot of stores simply won’t take the item back. So here’s the traveler’s golden rule, the thing to actually remember: don’t remove the tags, and hang on to the receipt, until you are one hundred percent sure you’re keeping what you bought.

M: Then comes the key fork in the road, the question that decides everything: “Would you like a refund, or an exchange?” These are two words you really must not mix up. A refund means you get your actual money back — it goes back to your card or your cash. An exchange means you swap the item for something else instead — a different size, a different color, or a completely different product. Rachel wants her money back, not a swap, so she says, “Can I get a refund?” Honestly, that little phrase — “Can I get a refund?” — is the single most useful sentence in this whole episode. If you memorize only one line today, make it that one.

J: Now let’s talk about the reason for the return, because there’s some really useful fit vocabulary hiding here. Rachel explains, “It runs a little small.” When a piece of clothing “runs small,” it means it’s cut smaller than the size label suggests — so the medium fits like a small. “Runs big” is the exact opposite, cut roomier than expected. Super handy words when you shop. So she asks the natural follow-up: “Do you have it in a size up?” A “size up” means the next size bigger; a “size down” is the next size smaller. Unfortunately, the clerk says they’re “sold out of the larger size” — “sold out” just means there’s none left in stock. No bigger size, so Rachel circles back to the refund.

M: And two more real-world details that catch people off guard. First, the clerk gives her a heads-up: “Card refunds take three to five business days.” A “heads-up” is a friendly little warning so you’re not surprised, and “business days” means weekdays — Monday to Friday, not counting the weekend — so your money will NOT reappear on your card instantly. Don’t panic when it’s not there the next morning. Second, Rachel spots a different problem with another item: “This shirt is defective — there’s a hole in it.” “Defective” means faulty, broken, not made correctly. And here’s the lovely part: because it’s defective, the store offers to exchange it for free, with “no receipt needed.” Faulty goods get treated differently from a simple change of mind — you usually have stronger rights, so always speak up.

And the vocabulary is tiny but mighty: return, refund, exchange, receipt, it doesn’t fit, defective. Six or seven everyday words, plus that one magic sentence — “Can I get a refund?” — and suddenly you can walk into any store in an English-speaking country and sort out a bad buy without that sinking feeling in your stomach.
