M: Not at all. That first line, “What’s your excuse this time?” The key word there is “excuse.”

J: Right. She’s not asking, “Why are you late?” which is a neutral question.

M: By using the noun “excuse,” she’s already decided his reason isn’t valid. It immediately puts him on the defensive.

J: And he knows it, which is why he makes that joke about his grandma. But then she hits him with another great word.

J: Which then leads her to the absolute best line in this whole thing.

M: So if you don’t buy it, you’re rejecting it. You’re saying it has no value to you.

J: So, faced with all that doubt, what does Kevin do? He has to escalate.

M: Using the verb “swear” is like his last-ditch effort. It’s a really high-stakes word. He’s basically trying to force her to believe him by making this verbal oath.
