J: Welcome to MJ English. You know, it’s funny how sometimes the uh, the most basic everyday situations, they can be the hardest ones to actually talk about when you’re learning a new language.

M: Like, how do you really describe that feeling when it’s just incredibly sweltering hot outside?

J:  We learn all the formal stuff, but, yeah, real life needs real words.

M: And nothing feels more real or more immediate than uh, dealing with a really scorching summer day.

J: Right. So today, we’re actually going to listen in on a conversation that I think many of you will relate to. It’s set in Taipei, which, you know, gets notoriously hot.

M: Hot and humid.

J: It’s a quick chat between two students, Chloe and Kevin. They’re waiting for their parents after class, just talking about the summer heat. So, listen closely, okay? Because we’re about to pick up some really great practical English phrases for surviving hot weather.

M: Let’s hear it.

Chloe: Ah, it’s way too hot today. I’m sweating like crazy.

Chloe:

Kevin: Same here. I think I might be getting a heat stroke.

Kevin:

Chloe: Did you put on sunscreen before class?

Chloe:

Kevin: I forgot, and now my neck feels like it’s on fire.

Kevin:

Chloe: Looks like you’re getting a sunburn.

Chloe:

Kevin: And guess what, I got bitten by a mosquito again.

Kevin:

Chloe: Summer is a nightmare in Taiwan.

Chloe:

Kevin: I’m going straight home to turn the AC down to 20 degrees.

Kevin:

Chloe: Careful. My mom says setting the air conditioner too low gives you a cold.

Chloe:

Kevin: I’ll risk it. I’m melting here.

Kevin:

Chloe: Aha, next time, remember sunscreen, a fan, and mosquito spray.

Chloe:

Kevin: Got it. And maybe a popsicle, too.

Kevin:

M: Wow, okay. That definitely sounds like a uh, a typical summer afternoon chat for a lot of people.

J: Totally relatable. So, let’s unpack that a bit. What useful bits of language can we pull out for, you know, for improving our English?

M: Yeah, what are the gems in there?

J: Well, right at the start, Chloe says, “I’m sweating like crazy.” Now, she could just say, “I’m sweating,” right?

J: 好,首先 Chloe 說了「I’m sweating like crazy」。

M: Right, simple enough.

J: But adding “like crazy,” that really amps it up. It shows she’s extremely uncomfortable, sweating a lot. It’s a great informal intensifier. You hear it all the time, like working like crazy, raining like crazy.

這是一個極佳的口語增強語,你常會聽到「working like crazy、raining like crazy」等等。

M: That’s a good one.

J: Okay, and then Kevin says, “I think I might be getting a heat stroke.” “Heat stroke,” that sounds serious.

J: 好,接著 Kevin 說「I think I might be getting a heat stroke」。Heat stroke(中暑),聽起來很嚴重。

M: It is. It’s a key vocabulary word, definitely. It means your body’s dangerously overheated. But look at the grammar, too, “I might be getting.”

不過也要注意文法,「I might be getting」。

J: Right, “might be getting.” What’s that doing?

J: 沒錯,「might be getting」在這裡有什麼語法作用?

M: Well, “might” shows it’s just a possibility. He’s not sure. And “be getting” suggests it’s like a process that could be starting right now. It’s perfect for describing symptoms you think are developing. Really useful structure.

J: Okay, got it. And poor Kevin’s also dealing with the sun. Chloe says, “looks like you’re getting a sunburn.”

Chloe 說「looks like you’re getting a sunburn」。

M: Yeah, another summer classic, huh? Sunburn. And that phrase, “looks like,” is super common.

M: 沒錯,又是一個夏季經典:sunburn(曬傷)。

M: We use it all the time to comment on appearance or what seems to be happening based on what we see. Chloe sees his neck, probably red, right? So she says, “looks like you’re getting a sunburn.” It’s an observation, a guess, based on evidence. Very natural.

Chloe 看到他脖子可能發紅,就說「looks like you’re getting a sunburn」。

J: Makes sense.

J: 很合理。

J: And then, oh, the mosquitoes, “I got bitten by a mosquito.” Everyone needs that phrase.

J: 然後,蚊子部分,「I got bitten by a mosquito」。

M: Exactly, so common, so practical. Mosquito bite, essential summer vocab.

J: And then finally, the ultimate summer argument, or maybe salvation, the AC.

M: The air conditioner, yeah.

J: Kevin says, “I’m going straight home to turn the AC down to 20 degrees.”

J: Kevin 說「I’m going straight home to turn the AC down to 20 degrees」。

M: So that tells us how to talk about adjusting it.

J: Precisely. You turn the AC down to a temperature, or up to a temperature, or you can set it to 20 degrees. Really practical phrasing for controlling your environment.

J: 沒錯。你可以說「turn the AC down to 20 degrees」或「turn it up to…」或「set it to 20 degrees」。

M: Yeah, you can really see how these phrases aren’t just, you know, random words, they’re tools.

J: Exactly.

N: So, thinking about that conversation, what phrase really stood out to you? Maybe one you could use next time you’re, uh, feeling that summer heat.

J: Yeah, give it some thought. Getting comfortable with these kinds of everyday expressions, it really does make a difference in how fluent you sound.
