Nothing much, just caught up on sleep. How about you?

How was your weekend? 母語者的做法是三段式:答案(Nothing much/Pretty chill/Busy one)+一句延伸(just caught up on sleep/I finally cleaned my apartment)+反問(How about you?/Did you do anything fun?)。 I did absolutely nothing and it was great。

Nothing. → Nothing much, just caught up on sleep.;② Just stay home.(時態錯)→ I just stayed home.;③ I have no special.(直翻「沒什麼特別的」)→ Nothing special, really.

Adam

Morning, Ivy. How was your weekend?

Ivy

Nothing. Just stay home.

Adam

Oh. Okay. Cool.

Ivy

Sorry, that came out weird. I mean, nothing much. I stayed home and caught up on sleep.

Adam

Honestly, that sounds amazing. I need one of those weekends.

Ivy

Right? I binged a whole show on Saturday and didn’t feel bad about it at all. How about you?

Adam

We took the kids to Yangmingshan. Great hike, terrible traffic coming back.

Ivy

Oh no, Sunday traffic is the worst. Was the weather okay up there?

Adam

Perfect, actually. A little windy, but way cooler than the city.

Ivy

Nice. Okay, I should get to my desk. Have a good one!

週末閒聊三段式:答案(Nothing much/Pretty chill/Busy one)+一句延伸(just caught up on sleep)+反問(How about you?)。

Nothing much
②很輕鬆=Pretty chill
③補眠=caught up on sleep
④追劇=binged a show
Busy one
⑥反問=How about you?
⑦追問細節=Did you do anything fun?
I should get to my desk.

Next Time

Nothing.

Nothing much, just caught up on sleep.

Just stay home.

I just stayed home.

I have no special.

Nothing special, really.

Vocabulary Boost

nothing much/ˈnʌθɪŋ mʌtʃ/

Nothing much, just stayed home.(沒做什麼,就待在家。)

chill/tʃɪl/ adj.

It was a pretty chill weekend.(這週末滿悠閒的。)

catch up on/kætʃ ʌp ɑːn/

I caught up on sleep.(我補了眠。)

binge/bɪndʒ/ v.

I binged a whole show.(我追完一整部劇。)

hike/haɪk/ n.

It was a great hike.(那趟健行很棒。)

traffic/ˈtræfɪk/ n.

The traffic was terrible.(塞車塞得很慘。)

how about you/haʊ əˈbaʊt juː/

I stayed in. How about you?(我待在家。

get to my desk/ɡet tuː maɪ desk/

I should get to my desk.(我該回座位了。)

Sentence Patterns

1. 沒做什麼 → Nothing much, just + 過去式

Nothing much, just caught up on sleep.(沒做什麼,就補了眠。)
例:Nothing special, really. I stayed in.(真的沒什麼,我待在家。)
例:Pretty chill. I finally cleaned my apartment.(滿悠閒的。

2. 有出去玩 → I went + 地點/I took + 人 + to

I went to Jiufen with some friends.(我跟朋友去了九份。)
例:We took the kids to Yangmingshan.(我們帶小孩去陽明山。)
例:I tried that new ramen place near the office.(我去吃了公司附近新開的拉麵。)

How about you? / Did you do anything fun?

例:How about you?(你呢?)
例:Did you do anything fun?(你有做什麼好玩的嗎?)

4. 接對方的話 → Oh no, + 同感 / That sounds + 形容詞

Oh no, Sunday traffic is the worst.(喔不,星期天的車潮最可怕。)
例:That sounds amazing. I need one of those weekends.(聽起來超讚,我也需要這種週末。)
例:Was the weather okay up there?(山上天氣還好嗎?)
the worst/the best

I should get to my desk. / Anyway, have a good one.

Okay, I should get to my desk.(好,我該回座位了。)
例:Anyway, have a good one!(總之,祝你今天順利!)
例:Let’s catch up later.(等一下再聊。)

Transcript

J
Okay, when a coworker asks how your weekend was, what’s the first thing you actually say? I’m Jason, and for a lot of us, it’s just one word: “Nothing.”
M
I’m Mary, and that one word basically kills the conversation. The other person just stands there, and neither of you knows what to say next, so it gets awkward fast.
J
This happens every Monday, right? Someone walks by with their coffee, sees you, and goes, “How was your weekend?” It’s not a big question, but somehow our brains just go completely blank.
M
Here’s the thing, doing nothing is actually a great answer. Native speakers love saying they did absolutely nothing all weekend and enjoyed every minute of it. That’s not the real problem here.
J
The real problem is how you say it. There’s a simple formula today, just three parts: your answer, plus one extra line, plus you bounce the question back.
M
So instead of just saying “Nothing,” you say something like, “Nothing much, just caught up on sleep. How about you?” Three little parts, and just like that, the conversation keeps moving instead of dying.所以不要只回「Nothing」,可以說:「Nothing much, just caught up on sleep. How about you?」(沒做什麼,就是補了個眠。
J
Or you could say, “Pretty chill. I stayed in and binged a show. Did you do anything fun?” Same idea: your answer, one small detail, then a question back. I stayed in and binged a show. Did you do anything fun?」(滿悠閒的,我在家追完一整部劇。
M
If it really was a quiet one, try, “Not much, honestly. I needed a slow weekend. What about you?” Or you could say “Busy one,” and add a quick word about what kept you busy. Either way, it still sounds warm, not cold or distant. I needed a slow weekend. What about you?」(真的沒做什麼,我需要一個放鬆的週末,你呢?)
J
Honestly, “How was your weekend?” is basically just a greeting. Nobody wants your full itinerary, so three lines and you’re done, no need to explain your whole Saturday.老實說,「How was your weekend?」
M
Now the traps, because there are three that Taiwanese speakers fall into a lot. The first is simply answering with one word, “Nothing,” full stop, and just standing there.
J
That’s trap number one. “Nothing,” period, feels cold in English, even if you don’t mean it that way. Fix it with, “Nothing much, just caught up on sleep.” 修正方式是:「Nothing much, just caught up on sleep.」(沒做什麼,就補了個眠。)
M
Trap number two is tense. People often say, “Just stay home,” but the weekend already happened, so it needs past tense. It should be, “I just stayed home.” 應該說:「I just stayed home.」(我就待在家。)
J
This one is huge, honestly, it’s the biggest giveaway that English isn’t your first language. Stayed, binged, went, took, tried, every single one of them needs that past tense ending.
M
Trap number three, “I have no special,” is a straight translation from Chinese. But special is an adjective, so it can’t stand alone like that in a sentence.
J
Instead, say, “Nothing special, really.” Adding really at the end softens it and makes it sound like something a real friend would say, not a translation.
M
Now, what if you actually went somewhere, or even just did something small, like finally cleaning your apartment? Going out answers work just as well, and there’s no shortage of good options around Taipei.
J
You could say, “I went to Jiufen with some friends,” or “We took the kids to Yangmingshan for a hike.” Simple, past tense, and it gives the other person something to react to.可以說:「I went to Jiufen with some friends.」(我跟朋友去了九份。)或者「We took the kids to Yangmingshan for a hike.」(我們帶小孩去陽明山健行。)
M
Or, “I tried that new ramen place near the office.” It doesn’t need to be exciting, just one small detail so it doesn’t sound like an office report.或者:「I tried that new ramen place near the office.」(我去吃了公司附近新開的拉麵。)
J
After you answer, always bounce it back. “How about you,” “Did you do anything fun,” “Anything exciting,” any of these work fine, just don’t forget that part. 「How about you」、「Did you do anything fun」、「Anything exciting」,隨便一句都可以,重點是千萬別忘記這一步。
M
It’s like a game of catch, honestly. You give a little, they give a little. If you never throw the question back, it turns into an interview.
J
And when they answer, react a little before moving on. “Oh no, Sunday traffic is the worst,” or “That sounds amazing, I need one of those weekends.” 「Oh no, Sunday traffic is the worst.」(喔不,星期天的車潮最可怕。)或者「That sounds amazing, I need one of those weekends.」(聽起來超讚,我也需要那種週末。)
M
You could also ask a small follow-up like, “Was the weather okay up there?” It shows the other person you’re actually listening, not just waiting for your own turn to talk again.也可以順便追問一句,像:「Was the weather okay up there?」(山上天氣還好嗎?)
J
And when it’s time to wrap up, you don’t need a big exit. “Okay, I should get to my desk,” or “Anyway, have a good one,” both work fine. 「Okay, I should get to my desk.」(好,我該回座位了。)或者「Anyway, have a good one.」(總之,祝你順利。)
M
That word anyway at the start of a sentence is basically a signal. It means, okay, I’m wrapping this up now. Native speakers use it constantly.anyway
J
Let’s run through today’s vocab quickly. Nothing much, chill, catch up on, binge, hike, traffic, how about you, and get to my desk, that covers Monday morning.快速複習一下今天的單字:nothing much、chill、catch up on、binge、hike、traffic、how about you,還有 get to my desk,這些大概就是週一早上會用到的全部了。
M
Chill just means relaxed, catch up on works for sleep or a show, and binge means you watched a ton of episodes back to back in one sitting.chill 就是輕鬆、悠閒的意思,catch up on 可以接睡眠、工作或劇,binge 是指一口氣連續看完好幾集,中間都沒停。
J
Okay, we’re just about done. Let’s hear Adam and Ivy one more time, and listen for the moment Ivy restarts, because that’s when the whole thing opens up.

Okay, so the second time through, notice how Ivy just adds one small detail, and that’s the exact moment the whole conversation opens right back up.
