2026 09 02 en interview weakness 1 Business English |

台灣人最容易卡的雷:① I don’t have any weaknesses(自大又不誠實);② I’m a perfectionist(每個人都這樣講,招募方翻白眼)。要挑 a real but not fatal weakness(真實但不致命),再接 I’ve been working on…(我正在改善)。

Grace

Okay, let’s practice. “What’s your biggest weakness?” How would you answer that?

Leo

Easy. I’d say I don’t really have any major weaknesses.

Grace

That’s the fastest way to sound arrogant. Interviewers want a real answer, not “I’m perfect.”

Leo

Fine — then I’d say I’m a perfectionist. That counts as a weakness, right?

Grace

Everyone says that, and recruiters roll their eyes. Pick something real but not fatal — true, but it won’t cost you the job.

Leo

Hmm. Honestly, I get pretty nervous speaking up in big meetings.

Grace

Now that’s usable. But don’t stop there — show what you’re doing about it.

Leo

Right. I’ve been working on it by volunteering to present in smaller team meetings first.

Grace

Perfect. That turns a weakness into a growth story. End on the progress, not the flaw.

Leo

Got it — pick something real, then show I’m improving it. Not “I’m a perfectionist.”

I don’t have any weaknesses(自大)
③別說 I’m a perfectionist(老套)
④挑 real but not fatal(真實不致命)
I’ve been working on…
⑥收在進步 end on the progress
⑦例:get nervous in big meetings
⑧改善法:present in smaller meetings first

Next Time

I don’t have any weaknesses.

Honestly, I tend to take on too much — but I’ve been working on it.

I’m a perfectionist.

I can be too detail-focused, so I’ve started setting time limits.

I’m bad at public speaking.

I used to freeze in presentations, but I’ve been practicing in smaller meetings.

Vocabulary Boost

weakness/ˈwiːknəs/ n.

Don’t just say you’re a perfectionist.(別只會說你是完美主義者。)

come across as/kʌm əˈkrɔːs æz/

It can come across as arrogant.(那可能給人自大的印象。)

I’ve been working on my time management.(我一直在改善時間管理。)

room for improvement/ruːm fər ɪmˈpruːvmənt/

Sentence Patterns

1. 挑真實但不致命的弱點 → a real but not fatal weakness

Pick a weakness that’s real but not fatal.(挑一個真實但不致命的弱點。)
例:Don’t pick something central to the job.(別挑這份工作最核心的能力。)

I’ve been working on…

I’ve been working on it by taking a course.(我在上課改善它。)
例:I’ve started setting deadlines for myself.(我開始幫自己設截止時間。)
例:I’ve been practicing every week.(我每週都在練習。)
I’ve been working on…

3. 收在進步、不是缺點 → end on the progress

例:…and it’s gotten a lot better.(……
例:…so now I catch it early.(……
例:…and my last review showed real improvement.(……

I tend to… / I can be…

I tend to take on too much.(我常會攬太多事。)
例:I can be overly detail-focused.(我有時會太鑽細節。)
I tend to/I can be 比 I’m bad at 專業、也不會太自貶。

5. 把弱點框成成長 → turn it into a strength

I’ve turned it into a strength.(我把它變成一個優勢了。)
例:It’s become one of my strengths now.(它現在變成我的強項之一。)
例:Now it’s something I’m actually good at.(現在這反而是我擅長的事。)

Transcript

J
Most people think ‘What’s your biggest weakness?’ is a trap question, like the interviewer is just waiting to catch you slipping up. I’m Jason, and today we’re flipping that myth completely upside down.
M
It’s not a trap at all — it’s actually testing two things: honesty and growth. I’m Mary, and once you see it that way, the whole question stops being scary for good.
J
Right, the interviewer isn’t hoping you’ll expose some fatal flaw that ends the interview on the spot. They just want to see if you know yourself and if you’re actively working on getting better.
M
So today we’re breaking down the exact formula for a great answer, and near the end we’ll replay a real coaching session between our coach Grace and a candidate named Leo.
J
Let’s start with the formula. Step one — pick a weakness that’s real but not fatal. It has to be true, but it can’t be central to the actual job. 第一步,挑一個真實但不致命的弱點(real but not fatal weakness)。
M
Exactly. If you’re interviewing to be an accountant and you say ‘I’m bad with numbers,’ that’s honest, sure, but it’s fatal — you just talked yourself right out of the job.
J
Right, so you want something true but off to the side. Step two is showing what you’re actually doing about it — that’s where the phrase ‘I’ve been working on…’ comes in.
M
That’s present perfect continuous — it signals ongoing effort, not a one-time fix. You’re not just naming the problem, you’re proving that you’re actively handling it right now, today.
J
And step three, the most important part — end on the progress, not the flaw. Don’t let your last sentence be the weakness; let it be how far you’ve already come.
M
That order matters so much — weakness first, action second, progress last — because interviewers remember whatever comes last, and you want that to be your growth, not your flaw.
J
Now let’s talk about what to avoid. Cliché number one: ‘I don’t have any weaknesses.’ It sounds confident on the surface, but it just comes across as arrogant, or worse, unaware.
M
Nobody actually believes that answer, and it raises a real red flag — self-awareness is exactly what they’re testing for, and that response proves you have none at all.
J
Cliché number two: ‘I’m a perfectionist.’ Interviewers have heard it a thousand times before. It’s basically a humble-brag disguised as a weakness, and honestly, it doesn’t fool anyone anymore.
M
So what should you actually say instead? Here are some safe example weaknesses that really work. ‘I get nervous in big meetings’ is a great one — specific and relatable.
J
Another solid choice is ‘I tend to take on too much.’ It shows ambition right alongside the flaw, which actually makes you look dedicated rather than incompetent or lazy.
M
Or try ‘I can be too detail-focused.’ Notice both of those use softeners — ‘I tend to’ and ‘I can be’ — instead of flat, absolute statements about yourself. 注意這兩句都用了緩和語(softeners)——「I tend to」跟「I can be」——而不是講死絕對的話。
J
Softeners matter because they show self-awareness without sounding dramatic. You’re not saying ‘I always mess this up,’ you’re saying ‘this happens sometimes, and I’m fully aware of it.’
M
Beyond softeners, there are phrases that make you sound genuinely self-aware. Try ‘I see it as a growth area’ instead of flatly just calling it a weakness. 可以試試「I see it as a growth area」,把它講成一個成長領域,而不只是缺點。
J
Or ‘I’m self-aware about it’ — that single phrase does a lot of work. It tells the interviewer you’ve already reflected on this, not that you’re discovering it right now.
M
My favorite is ‘I’ve turned it into a strength.’ If you can genuinely say that, it shows the whole arc — the problem, the effort, and a real result.我最喜歡的是「I’ve turned it into a strength」。
J
Put it all together: a real but not fatal weakness, a softener, what you’re actively doing about it, and end on the progress using one of those self-aware phrases.
M
One more tip — keep the whole answer under thirty seconds. If you ramble on, it sounds like you’re still processing the flaw instead of having already handled it.
J
Thirty seconds forces you to be sharp. Pick the weakness, show the action, land on the growth, and done — no extra apologizing, no over-explaining, no dragging it out.
M
It also just sounds more confident overall. A short, clean answer says ‘I’ve already thought about this,’ while a long, rambling one says ‘I’m figuring this out live.’
J
So let’s recap the formula one more time — a real weakness, a softener, ‘I’ve been working on…’, then end on progress. Skip ‘no weaknesses’ and skip ‘perfectionist’ completely.
M
And lean on those safe examples and self-aware phrases whenever you get stuck. They’re not scripts to memorize word for word, just a direction to build your own answer from.
J
Okay, we’ve covered a lot — let’s do one last thing before we wrap. Let’s hear the whole coaching session one more time, now that you actually know the formula.
M
Listen for the exact moment Leo’s answer goes from bad to good — that’s the moment the formula clicks into place. Here it is, one more time, all the way through.
🔁 [DIALOGUE REPLAY]
J
The second time through, you can hear it: real but not fatal, then show you’re working on it, end on the progress. Never ‘I’m a perfectionist.’
