The conversation we just heard between Brian and Chloe is happening in cafés all over the Bay Area this month, and it’s the conversation Taiwanese engineers tell me they freeze on.

M: And I’m Mary. The freezing isn’t because of English level. It’s because the wrong word at the wrong moment will tank your career story. We’re going to walk through five moves Brian and Chloe just modeled, and the one piece of grammar — mixed conditional — that lets you talk about a layoff like an adult who’s been through it before.

J: Move one — the disclosure. Brian says, “I got laid off. Twenty minutes ago.” Three things to notice. First — got laid off, not “was laid off.” Got is more conversational in spoken English; was sounds like a press release. Second — the time stamp. Twenty minutes ago is brutal, but Brian’s honest about it. Pretending it happened last week, when it didn’t, makes you sound like you’re hiding shame.
J: 第一招——揭露。Brian 說 “I got laid off. Twenty minutes ago.”。三個重點。第一—— got laid off，不是 was laid off。Got 在口語比較自然，was 像新聞稿。第二——時間點。二十分鐘前很殘酷，但 Brian 誠實說了。明明剛發生卻講上禮拜，聽起來像在藏羞愧。

M: And third — the absolute critical thing. He says laid off, not fired. In English, these two words live in different universes. Fired implies you, personally, did something wrong — you missed deadlines, you broke a rule, you got caught. Laid off means the company restructured and your role got eliminated. It’s about the company, not about you. If you slip and say “I was fired” when you were actually laid off, every recruiter you talk to for the next year will silently downgrade your story.
M: 第三——最關鍵的。他說 laid off，不是 fired。這兩個字在英文裡是兩個宇宙。Fired 暗示你個人犯錯——錯過 deadline、違規、被抓包。Laid off 則是公司重組、你的職位被砍掉。重點在公司，不在你。如果你不小心說成 “I was fired” 但其實是 laid off，接下來一整年所有 recruiter 心裡都會默默幫你的故事扣分。

J: Move two — the friend’s reaction. Chloe doesn’t sugarcoat it. She says “Wait — what? You’re kidding.” That’s the right register. Don’t go “Oh, I’m so sorry” as the first beat — that’s funeral language, it puts your friend in a coffin emotionally. Genuine shock — “wait, what?” — actually validates the news as unexpected, which is what your friend needs to hear.
J: 第二招——朋友的反應。Chloe 沒有粉飾。她說 “Wait — what? You’re kidding.”。這就是對的語感。第一句不要說 “Oh, I’m so sorry”——那是葬禮用語，把你朋友情緒上推進棺材。真心的震驚——”wait, what?”——反而把這個消息確認為「意料之外」，這正是你朋友需要聽到的。

M: Then she follows with the practical question — “Did they at least give you a decent severance package?” A severance package is the compensation bundle you get when laid off: salary continuation, unused PTO cashed out, healthcare extended. In Silicon Valley 2026, three to six months is the standard. Anything less is a red flag. Asking this question is how friends signal “I’m taking your situation seriously, not just emotionally but logistically.”
M: 接著她丟出實際的問題——”Did they at least give you a decent severance package?”。Severance package 就是你被 layoff 時拿到的整套補償：薪資延續、沒休完的 PTO 折現、健保延長。2026 矽谷標準是三到六個月，少於這個是警訊。問這句話，是朋友在傳達「我認真看待你的處境，不只是情緒上，連實務面都關心」。

J: Move three — the emotional admission. Brian opens up: “Honestly? I’m blindsided.” Blindsided is a vivid American word — it comes from football, when a tackler hits you from a side you couldn’t see. In daily English, it means completely unprepared, ambushed. It’s not “surprised” — surprised is mild. Blindsided is “the news hit me like a truck.”
J: 第三招——情緒的承認。Brian 開口：”Honestly? I’m blindsided.”。Blindsided 是美式英文裡畫面感很強的字——源自橄欖球，敵人從你看不到的盲點撲倒你。在日常英文裡，意思是完全沒準備、被偷襲。不是 surprised——surprised 太輕。Blindsided 是「這消息像卡車撞上我」。

M: And right after that comes the grammar centerpiece of this episode. Brian says: “If I had built up my side projects last year, I wouldn’t be panicking about runway right now.” This is mixed conditional. Hear it again — if I had built, I wouldn’t be panicking. The if-clause is in past perfect — talking about something that didn’t happen in the past. The result clause is in present continuous with would — talking about how that past affects the present.
M: 緊接著就是這集的文法核心。Brian 說：”If I had built up my side projects last year, I wouldn’t be panicking about runway right now.”。這是 mixed conditional——混合虛擬語氣。再聽一次—— if I had built（如果我當初有建立）, I wouldn’t be panicking（我現在就不會在恐慌）。If 子句用過去完成式，講「過去沒發生的事」；結果子句用 would + 進行式，講「那個過去如何影響現在」。

J: This is different from regular third conditional. Third conditional — if I had X, I would have Y — both halves are in the past. Past wish, past consequence. Done. Mixed conditional pulls the consequence into the present. “If I had built side projects, I wouldn’t be panicking now.” The past decision is still bleeding into now. That’s what makes mixed conditional emotionally heavy — you’re saying the past hasn’t finished hurting yet.
J: 這跟一般的第三條件句不一樣。第三條件句——if I had X, I would have Y——前後都在過去。過去的遺憾，過去的後果，結束了。Mixed conditional 把後果拉到現在。”If I had built side projects, I wouldn’t be panicking now.”（如果我當初有經營副業，我現在就不會在恐慌。）那個過去的決定還在現在流血。這就是 mixed conditional 情緒重量這麼重的原因——你在說，過去的傷還沒結束。

M: For Taiwanese learners, here’s the trick — when you want to express present regret about a past decision, default to mixed conditional. Not “if I had saved more, I would have been fine” — that’s past-past. Try “if I had saved more, I wouldn’t be stressed right now.” Past-present. That’s the sentence a layoff conversation needs, because the consequence is still happening.
M: 給台灣讀者一個技巧——當你想表達「對過去某個決定，現在還在後悔」的時候，預設用 mixed conditional。不要說 “if I had saved more, I would have been fine”——那是過去對過去。試試 “if I had saved more, I wouldn’t be stressed right now.”（如果我當初多存點錢，我現在就不會這麼焦慮。）過去對現在。這就是 layoff 對話需要的句子——因為後果還在發生。

J: Move four — self-blame meets friend’s pushback. Brian says “I should have seen it coming.” Should have plus past participle — the classic regret structure. See it coming means foresee, predict. He’s blaming himself for missing the signals. Chloe immediately counters with “Don’t beat yourself up. Nobody saw this coming.” This is the choreography of American consolation — one person self-flagellates, the other person catches them. Learn both halves. You’ll be on both sides of this conversation in your career.

M: Move five — the gift. Chloe says, “I know a recruiter at Anthropic. Let me put in a good word for you.” This is the most valuable sentence in the entire conversation. In the US, 80 percent of tech jobs are filled through referral, not through LinkedIn applications. When someone offers to put in a good word, they’re literally handing you a winning lottery ticket. The correct response is not “thanks” — that’s too light. The correct response is what Brian says: “That would mean a lot.” Acknowledge the weight of the offer.

It’s now crossed into personal finance. “I have six months of runway” means “I have six months of savings before I have to find income.” It’s a powerful word because it implies you’re thinking like a CEO of your own life, not a victim of circumstance.
